  • Up Front: Same as it Ever Was,

    but it was extremely frustrating.

which may, or may not, have proved quite stimulating... at least to one of you... :-)

  • Field Theory: All White on the night,

    One shot for Rory!!

He's mad, he's bad, he's better than his dad, Rory Fallon!!

We sang our way all the way out the stadium, and down the concourse. The eleven year-old suggested we hit Courtney Place!

If it comes to that, what about mandatory fingerprinting of all adults, just in case? Would you have a problem with that? Why? Surely only the guilty have something to fear?

Hang on a minute. I wasn't suggesting that at all.

Also, you get fingerprinted after being arrested, this would be before.

Thanks, I wasn't aware of that. I assumed it was only happening after you were arrested and facing a potential custodial sentence of a couple of years.

I love mellowpuffs. I used to be the type who bit the top off, then lingered on the biscuit base. No more. I like to think I've grown up a little, and now eat them whole, just like God (New Testament, not Jewish) intended.

This isn't a well thought-out question, and I will probably regret it, but isn't compulsory DNA gathering and storing for suspects the same as fingerprinting? Is it the sense that the DNA is more personal, and the gathering more intrusive? Just saying...

And in reference to my comments up thread re Maori Television, I must apologise and amend my statement - the insult is "mellowpuff", not "marshmellow", implying that the person is brown on the outside, but white in the middle. Nice, eh. It's already been thrown at Carol, who certainly doesn't deserve it.

  • Hard News: Standing up and calling bullshit,

Everyone here lauds the way MTV reflects Maori culture, without making the obvious connection that they do so with a staff recruited almost entirely from the community they serve, and that that is seen as important part of the job description within that organisation.

Just quietly, some of the senior programme commissioners and reporters they have recruited from "mainstream" channels have quietly (and sometimes publicly) been labeled "marshmallows" when they have tried to introduce mainstream concepts like balance, fairness and accuracy into MTS' news and current affairs programmes.

  • Hard News: Dunce Dunce Revolution,

FFS, TVNZ "news" manage to turn the issue into a toss up between teaching kids to count strawberries or putting on calf club days.
It really was an in depth analysis of the issues wasn't it? I mean it's only the education of almost every child in the country, doesn't matter how it's done does it TVNZ? Ohh look! Sheep! Cows! Pretty pictures!

That'll be the influence of some mid-Western US news consultants. Everything has to be more "active", reporters (I started with "journalists", but that would have been inaccurate) have to put themselves into the story.

It might also help if TVNZ had a reporter who had some in-depth knowledge about the topic. They got rid of rounds a while ago, so now the reporter who gets handed the education story might have done a court story, a consumer story and a business story earlier in the week. They spend most of the day just trying to understand the story, which is how it is so easy for them to get captured by one or other of the various interest groups.

The other problem is they are all so young and inexperienced that very few of them actually have children, let alone school age kids, so they have little or no knowledge of what is being said by parents in the school carpark.

  • Hard News: Do these people even talk?,

I guess that would depend on how many business/tourism opportunities or jobs for Maori TVNZ is proposing on generating from their additional funding.

Apparently that was one of the factors that influenced the Government's actions, according to Patrick Gower in today's Herald.

TVNZ's involvement is necessary because it has the reach and numbers to hype up the tournament over the next two years and get people through the gates, with ticketing the only way the Government and Rugby Union can make money and stem losses.

I guess TVNZ will turn down the additional money right after MTS does the same.

Seeing the MTS getting shafted by TVNZ...

I think your beef should be with the Government, rather than TVNZ. I know putting the boot into the Big, Bad Broadcaster (tm) is a favoured past-time that almost rivals kicking the All Black coach every time they lose, but I think you need to adjust your sights here. MTS got shafted, but Coleman and McCully and Sharples are the ones who look like they are playing with their own personal TV channels.
