  • Hard News: Tooled Up for Food,

Gasping here! And drooling. The Thermomix looks wonderful. A rice cooker is doable - I have enough Flybuys. Had discarded the idea but I'm talked into it. I gave away the iron frying pan - it was kind of wrist-breaking to lift it. But I have a small Ranzware pan that I use for toasting nuts and seeds, and also for frying eggs. I think it might have been the down market version of Le Creuset. Not that we could buy Le C back in the 50's

  • Hard News: Who else forgot to get married?,

We were married in the registry office - 1961 and back then couples tended not to live together without marriage. We wanted a non-religious marriage, but the only place to have that was in the registry office. Which wasn't too bad - my husband worked in the court and his boss did the honours.

A couple of years later I became a Catholic (now recovering) - complicated reasons. One day I asked a dear old priest what the status of my marriage was, given that we'd had a civil marriage and husband was, as ever, a happy pagan. The dear old priest went away and consulted other priests and told me that my marriage was valid, but not licit.

I giggled and said that an illicit relationship would explain why we were so happy. He didn't smile.

My daughter's partner, paramour, lover, whatever, says I can refer to him as a son-in-law.

  • Up Front: Somebody Think of the Young Adults!,

I visited a dear friend on Tuesday whose adult daughter had sent her a copy of the book. The daughter had bought the book for _her_ little girl, (for when the little girl is old enough to read) and sent it to dear friend in the meantime.

Do you think I should warn my friend?

Thanks Paul - that's a massive site and I'll settle down with a cup of something and read.

  • Hard News: Spread the Noise,

That was an interesting experience, reading your account of the Sept. quake. Interesting because I hadn't read it before - power was off and I was at my daughter's. And interesting because reading about it now, I still get the shallow-breathing thing, but not so much.

But the stars that morning were so bright. So close.

  • Hard News: First, admit it's broken, in reply to Stephen Judd,

I know I hardly ever contribute, but I'm a devoted lurker. I write lots of responses in my head, but someone always expresses what I'm thinking so much better. But I'll be there and it would be good to meet up with some of you. All of you - not excepting anyone here. You see why I don't often post. But I want to say how important some of you have been to me these last few years.

If nothing else, Freegal gets feet into the library, feet that otherwise may not be there. Feet that otherwise might feel they don't belong in a library.
