  • Hard News: Public Address Word of the…,

A couple of words I've heard enough of ...

    'perjury'

    'match-fixing'

And something we now don't have enough of ... 'advocacy journalism'

  • Polity: Cold, calculated and cynical, in reply to Russell Brown,

+1 - Had me shouting at the TV again last night.
The whole TV3 'report' was complete regurgitation of the dead cat. Paddy Gower presented opinion not facts and the sound-bites hammered home again and again ‘rapists and murderers’. No attempt for any balance and no indication about what the real story behind this debacle is.
As a Kiwi who has lived and worked in Australia on and off for years and paid god knows how much tax there, let’s be clear New Zealanders are discriminated against. This is not something that gives Australia any pause for thought. This is the same country that thought it was okay to legislate the Northern Territory National Emergency Response (NTER) NTER legislation and have it exempted from the Racial Discrimination Act.
Australia’s human rights abuses are many, detention centres are just one. There was a comment of John Key

He might as well be an Australian MP based on his performance this week.

Australia loves John Key, he and Malcolm Turnball are cut very much from the same cloth. John Key is supporting his mates and the New Zealand citizens he has been elected to represent suffer.
    Sickening and shameful.

  • Hard News: A better thing to believe in,

They are an extraordinary team not only because they win nearly all the time, but because of the way they play the game.

This seems to be true of our NZ Cricket Team of late (the way they play if not the winning).
Professional sport is business but I think what sets us apart is how we choose to engage.
Maybe John Key grew up wanting to be an All Black and now he finds himself in a position to force his way into the inner circle? I don't think he understands the harder he tries to be one of the boys the more he's on the outside.

  • Hard News: How about that cricket, eh?,

am I the only one who wondered (for the briefiest of seconds) whether SA would bowl that ball underarm?

  • Hard News: Word of the Year 2014: #dirtypolitics,

WOTY ... I do like a silly acronym.

Thanks for being a beacon of sanity in an essentially mental year Russell. Too often PAS was the only place I could go that felt like home :-)

So what are readers predictions for the year ahead? Surely there's something in the Whaleoil, John Key, Judith Collins turduken we haven't seen the last of?

Or some new scandal - Bill English invested us in heavily roubles on the recommendation of a mate down the pub?

Ever noticed how eerily similar she looks to Vladimar Putin ? Put a blonde wig on him and you couldn't tell the difference.

And some provocative Victory Red lippy

  • Busytown: School bully,

my long, slow realisation that the testing-tail was wagging the educational dog

I was reading this post and thinking to myself "jesus do none of these clowns watch The Wire" and there you are - linked straight in to it. I both snorted and chortled.
My daughter starts primary school later this year. I won't be voting National or Parata for many reasons. I'm not sure if I agree it's been a policy striptease - slowly revealing the true horror underneath or just a complete cock-up of off the cuff policy driven by sound-bite without any evidence-based input.

  • Hard News: Things worth knowing,

That $23 milk is very popular though
The popularity is such that the company is even considering getting its own plane.

Does that explain where flight MH370 went? Or is that just one conspiracry theory too far?

... when I hear about Judith Collins and her conflict of interest I just can't help wondering why Pansy Wong had to go but Judith doesn't? Are the circumstances really that different? Or is it just 'ministerial profile/ closeness to an election' that is driving it?
