  • Hard News: Arrest the bastards at the border,

No Michael, I am not British. Why ask? Are you a bigot?

Jason, my mention of time should have been 'circa' 50 years ago, not "over". Sir Michael F-F-Fay would have been about 8yrs if I figure that I was about 7.
His father was a well respected man in Insurance and Michael appeared to enjoy the importance.

To those who contributed about housing; I enjoyed the knowledge that was spread and I have learned from it.
My frustration came from the weave of the thread.
I did so want to comment on the excerpt from "God Bless You,Mr Rosewater", but by the time I was able to come back to the forum discussion had moved well away from the topic of slurping.

Kurt Vonnegut Jr. had a wonderful way of simplifying complex matters.
I reread "The Sirens Of Titan" a few months back. Even though the book is 'about' 50 yrs old it throws a very clear light on religious and personal beliefs that are still relevant now.
It makes me wish it was on Secondary School reading lists so that these values could be discussed by those who are learning about our brave new world.
    R.I.P. K.V.Jr.

My apologies to those who think I have wandered off-topic.

  • Hard News: Arrest the bastards at the border,

So should it have been quite a short thread, Yamis?

  • Hard News: Arrest the bastards at the border,

This is a very warped thread.
I was hoping for much more comment pointed towards the two merchant bank tricksters, but on page one the subject was changed to welfare fraud in connection with state housing.
Having re-read the original post I am unable to see any mention of that topic.
I am looking forward to a future post on welfare accomodation fraud, so that those of you who know so much about housing might all be able to express some thoughts on Fay and Richwhite.

  • Hard News: Arrest the bastards at the border,

Over half a century ago at an Insurance Institute picnic at Wenderholm I was very upset by a lanky snooty sounding boy who wanted total control of all the toys in the sandpit.
When confronted by adults he wormed his way out of trouble by spouting half-truths.
Nothing Michael Fay has done since has given me any cause to remove him from my Personal List Of Bastards.

  • Island Life: Child's play,

Little Bertie still has a lesson to learn about who has to be nice to him and who doesn't.
His disrespect with his mocking haka will be remembered by many.
His team provoked a lot of ill-feeling with their comments here.
His rich boy tantrums about people not being nice to him were prevalent in Auckland and four years later it appears he has still not adjusted.
He broke some of our culture's rules and appeared unconcerned. Now he wants people to behave the way he thinks is correct?
His double standards are probably easier to comply with if you are on his payroll.

  • Hard News: Compromise,

Barnett has talked of the useful smack to make his daughter settle down to sleep.
After smacking he tells her he loves her and all is well.

What sort of partner will she be seeking when the time comes?

Perhaps Barnett could try telling her he loves her before he hits her, then she could go to sleep feeling secure without needing a hiding as a catalyst.

Just because Barnett rose to fame through a childrens' TV show does not mean he understands much about children.

  • Island Life: Internet the way you want it,

    How does this go again?
Govt spends a billion to establish a network at the public's expense. New govt or the same govt sells SOE at discount to those who can afford to buy shares.
Those who cannot afford shares then have to pay monopoly controlled 'market rates' to use what they paid for originally.
It sounds like an historic echo in my phone system.

Would this network really remain 'ours' this time ?

  • Island Life: All stadium, all the time,

    Compie:
    The name is Hoppers.
Hoppers are the brothers who started with Pauanui.

It is hard to know if they cater to, or create the beachfront frenzy that is ripping the quiet of the coastal and rural areas apart.

Supplying property to well-heeled Aucklanders for weekenders has overwhelmed much of the meagre infrastructure in Northland.
Whangerei District Council has a moratorium on new subdivision until the infrastructure can catch up. (The Hopper project at Marsden Point was OKed before the brakes were put on)

City dwellers can purchase rural land with their highly inflated incomes in a way similar to the buying power of American dollars in poorer nations.

The land-grab that is going on for extra investment properties, which most of these often uninhabited houses are, is a major factor in the inflation that the reserve Bank is trying so hard to contain.

It would seem an appropiate time for Capital Gains Tax to be paid on anything other than the primary family home.
Second properties are investment properties and the rampant rises in house prices directly relates to the good returns that they provide. Why should this income not be taxed?

Tax them and relieve the pressure on what has often been good productive land. You know, the sort of land that produced tangible wealth for the country, not the inflationary 'funny' money that produces nothing but more dollars - not real wealth.
