  • Hard News: Welfare: Back to the Future?,

    As the song goes:

    'There's nothing surer,
The rich get richer and the poor get children. '

  • Hard News: Only what we would expect a…, in reply to Rich of Observationz,

If the courts want to suppress names, I think it would work better if they suppressed all identifying information

Which made me wonder where the occupation of 'celebrity' came from.... Devlin or the Herald.

  • Hard News: Postmodern Banks Anxiety,

What the Pope Knew, demonstrated, there is good evidence that Ratzinger left child-rapists in place (or at the very least, delayed their removal for years and kept them from the police) for what he took to be the greater good of the church.

Which is perhaps what has galvanised such animosity towards the Pope and the Church in general.

    And in the specific :

  • Hard News: Little pieces of a big picture,

It's not as if people have been thrown to the wolves - they had the option of buying insurance and chose to take the risk not to do so.

There are times, when money is tight, that insurance is seen as an option that can't be afforded.

For what it's worth, we watched the coverage on Sky ( which was also on Prime) until mid morning. It invited locals to ring and contact them and then relayed back...much more informative than TVNZ which I thought was kinda slow in getting out in the field...

  • Hard News: Doing Science in Court,

Not "Jim Salinger, lead author in the last IPCC report", or "Jim Salinger, nationally-famous weather scientist", but "Jim Salinger, who did some work for Niwa as a student and was later sacked for misconduct".

There has been a lengthy and sustained attack by ACT on NIWA and Salinger. This, in the House in March of this year, for example :

Hon Rodney Hide: How can the Minister have confidence in the work done by NIWA on climate science, when the institute’s information has led Ministers to give wrong answers in the House, when the principal author was associated with the now utterly discredited British climate research unit, when other scientific authorities disagree with him, when the institute itself has no material available that can support the analysis underpinning its official series, when the principal author of the series has now been sacked, and when the institute is having to review the series because it has no confidence in it, nor can it justify it or defend it?

Now that Salinger has been 'privatised' perhaps NIWA is in the sights...

  • Hard News: The truth about "Party Central",

"Party central" is, like the ambassadors' scheme, entirely a creation of government ministers.

Bugger. Just when I found a wharf with an antique shed on it here...

  • Hard News: Behind the Paywall,

Having free access to an online paper the day after it comes out wouldn't be too much of a problem for me, in fact often it allows some breathing space from the immediacy of the blogs.
It must hurt Murdoch that his flagship paper isn't framing the news nearly as much as I'm sure he would prefer...
