Oh yes , young NZers are frequently horrified by what they encounter , and have low tolerance of labour exploitation.
Wow. Ok, that is something I truly had no idea was happening. What is the pay and working conditions? How did this happen? How can we stop this?

Farmer Green, sorry, I'm not very knowledgeable about the dairy sector, so I have a few questions.
"Through-put driven", so this means that Fonterra is focussed on the volumes of milk it receives from farmers?

So, this refers to the effects of too many cows on the soil and waterways, fertiliser run-off etc? Anything else in the environmental category? And for economics, mainly is this the negatives effects of Fonterra's pricing model? What else?"A NZ added-value dairy company would have to contract its suppliers to calve in the Autumn , and milk through the winter"
Would this entail a feed lot operation? Or would cows be fed on silage and hay?"O.K. That is the collective will of the Fonterra farmer owners.

Are we bringing in FIlipinos to work in our dairy industry? Is there no local labour available for these jobs? What is PKE? (wikipedia comes up with nothing)Sorry, many questions!

You are correct Rich. Under the old Milk Regs. this was known as toned milk. It manifests today as Trim or Low Fat.
But there are still low fat milks that are not toned with powder etc.
Ecofarm Low Fat milk would be an example. It still tastes like milk.
Thanks for the extra clarification. So "full fat" milk is fresh milk, with no powder added?

Ah right, sorry, I thought he was an NZ journo, my bad. That's probably why they asked him to do their coverage, then. Maybe he can get them to expand coverage. I certainly rate the guardian's journalism higher than the print media's here.

I have noticed the guardian has had a lot more NZ coverage since they opened their Aus bureau, so I'm sure that trend will continue. They've hired Toby Manhire (sp?) or have some kind of arrangement with him, though that might have just been for the election. At any rate, I do expect they'll watch NZ events closer, and cover them more.

Well, you could say that too. But then as well, there are the people critiquing her column apparently accepting her assertion that the two sets of information are equivalent, and governed by the same laws and norms. But they're not. And I see this happen all the time, not just Fran's comment in this discussion, but in the newspapers and TV 'journalism' in this country.

People hate jury duty - compelling people to vote will only make them feel about it like they do about jury duty.
Can we stop comparing jury duty (which has the potential to go on for weeks) and voting (which lasts a few minutes).

The cow will likely never conceive again , and will, at least in the U.S. situation die of progressive organ failure, at the age of 4-5 years , having milked for 500-600 days.
I'm not saying Fonterra is doing this ;; I wouldn't know.
That is disgusting.
