  • Hard News: Claims,

Yeah, I wasn't going to say anything, but now Che nailed it I'm drawn to comment. Strangely enough.

Anyway, I'm not enjoying the over-analysis of this. The way I see it, he was incidental to the screening, as a young man he didn't report the 'crime' to superiors who knew about it anyway, he encourages a wholly different culture in the present Police culture, he has apologised, he has the strong support of the Police Association, and Wishart is a semi-crazed publicity-grasper.

    Case closed.

  • Hard News: Out of the Groove,

This is a very late reply, but...

The whole point is that Jon plays bemused everyperson (ie us) to their overblown idiocy.

Yeah, and I love it, but the 'bemused' part doesn't need to be rammed down our throats. Well, I'd just prefer a cocked eyebrow over his 'WHAAAAAA....?' thingies.

The correspondents are, scarily enough, almost exactly like those on the 'real' news, so their 'painfulness' has a bit of a satiric zing to it as well.

Yeah, they're spot on with the act. I just think they run so often that the occasional gold (was it Jason Jones in... Denmark?) is surrounded by a whole lot of semi-relevant stuff reported by people who compare poorly to Colbert - unfortunately he is nigh on impossible to beat!

    a) I don't know what 'painfully American' even means in this context and b) there's really nothing wrong with slapstick. It's a maligned comedic art form

    a) That referred to my original point to whoever spoke of him having great 'almost un-American' comedic stylings; and b) I just don't like slapstick. This is all just personal taste and I'm well-used to being in the minority on the issue! :)

  • Hard News: Out of the Groove,

    Dave Gibson

Man, gotta ask other people - who here has seen those C4 NZMM ads? With all the musicians eating.

Whoever edited those ads must really not like Dave Gibson. I'm very suspicious that he's not as much of an idiot as he's made out to be.

  • Hard News: Out of the Groove,

His methods remind me of something not very American

I spent all of last year in North America falling in love with Jon and Stephen Colbert. However, he's disappointing me a bit lately. He's so, so much better when he tones it down a little - but he seems to be doing less and less of that, at least on his own show. I'd be far happier if he dropped most of the correspondent reports (tiresome and painfully American, almost slapstick) and just focused on exposing the lies and interviewing.

He even said on a show last week that if the Administration keeps on going like this, he wouldn't even have to present the show, and then showed a little kid presenter saying 'blah blah blah'. I'd argue the same, but in t'other direction - the over the top reactions and most of the impersonations really undermine the otherwise intelligent and restrained treatment he gives them. I know he claims to be 'just' a comedian and not a journalist - my point is that he's a far better comedian when he lets the material breathe a little. We have Stephen Colbert if we want loud and abrasive!

The Daily Show book, meanwhile, is an absolute must-read, and even has a very dismissive page on New Zealand.

Wonder what Dei Hamo is doing now....

Not sure, but he's still wearing that amazing white tuxedo on my wall. That poster will be worth hundreds in a couple of years, honestly.

  • Hard News: No Friends of Science,

This all gets me quite depressed. When I arrived back from Canada around the start of the year there was a Herald reader poll: "Is climate change real?" Giggling, I voted 'Yes' and clicked through to my results. Horrifyingly, I had cast the vote that got 'Yes' ahead of 'No'. Really, really uncool.

Now I am banning myself from reading the Your Views section, because I don't want to believe that there are really people that insane out there.

I wrote a quick little spiel on George's article on the lovely new and improved nzmusic.com, which you should all check out. Everyone's a winner.
