i think Damian's emphasis was "for free"...
watching them all @ the local moviehouse would cost @ least $500. & the schedules might not work around yours. & you can't press the stop button to go to the lav. plus you have to deal with queues of punters.
so, others, what's so great about "little miss sunshine"? from the promo stuff it appears to be about a precocious brat... wrong?

I was simply impressed by "The Queen", as opposed to comparative dire expectations.
It made me hard pushed to think of any outstanding Brit films in the last few years.

we have an oscar ballot @ home but only got around to seeing the queen. so working blind with no hope of catching up @ this stage.
it's a copy from a winner, who is sharing them around (with most of the southern burbs, no doubt) for collective results.
i expected the queen to be absolutely dire, but was impressed. thanks for the heads up about dreamgirls though - phew that was a narrow escape.
whaddaya recommend we check the boxes for then??

talking of appliances throwing tantrums, i can't believe the immunity of aucklanders to car alarms!
@ waiheke island wine fest last weekend annika moa was indulging us in a very soulful set, with a backdrop of about half a dozen self-activated car alarms.
noone even so much as glanced in the direction of these oversize attention-grabbing vehicles. despite one of them being about 20 metres away from a relaxed & tipsy group of punters swaying calmly to the music...
that level of focus: i take my hat off to them.
on the vehicle ferry to from half moon bay, we counted 11 car alarm incidents - noone paid the slightest bit of attention, even on vehicle deck.
do car alarms work? does anyone pay attention?? what is the point???
mind you - i want some of that! how does one completely immune to obnoxious electronic beeping noises?
i listened to techno for years so it can't just be constant exposure.

How can he applaud raising the minimum wage yet also support people working for the dole? Which is far less than the minimum wage.
I have been on the dole a couple of times, for a couple of weeks each time, & the workshops I was forced to attend were agonisingly boring as well as insulting to the intelligence of the attendees. They also prevented us from looking for work!

That's a great breakthrough. Last time I investigated Vic Uni courses they were not only charging a small fortune (now it's $300 per term of weekly evening classes; still quite steep I think to learn one's native language, but maybe you do get what you pay for) but you had to enrol as a student which turned out to be more paperwork than there was for the entire course I was actually interested in. Now it appears they have reduced it to a straightforward online form - marvelous!
We were thrilled to find & enrol in a "Samoan as a Second Language" course recently - only to discover that the course's premise was to "learn how to preach the scriptures" in Samoan. Bugger. Not really our priority, in fact most off-putting.
There is a Samoan course @ Vic, but it costs roughly the same as a trip to Samoa, which is more fun.

i don't call them dumb anyway.
yep, humour has context (wow). my folks would look sideways at any friend of mine who came to their house & called me something traditionally disparaging like "white trash". unless it was exceptionally well delivered.
the learning media web site, while really useful for some quick online definitions, is not the best way to come to grips with te reo. i wonder what is - it's hard to find a course.
