Standing by you union, right or wrong is as bad as standing by your company, right or wrong.
Somewhere along the way reason and reality need to be considered.
The union is not an end in itself.

Equity may have "thought it was a game" (not convinced of that myself) but the MEAA sure as hell knew what it was doing. They've already seen production flight from Australia because of this sort of "game". And it was the MEAA, as part of the IFA, which issued the boycott notice. You can bet they all knew exactly what those consequences might be.
Personally, I still think AENZ knew bugger all about it until after the notice was issued, and then tried to be staunch with their affilliate and make the best of a bad situation. But that's only my opinion, y'all ;-)

I've been looking at the petition (1679) and one of the comments struck me:
While I support the actors in spirit (their cause has been somewhat distorted in the popular press) this boycott is a regrettable strategy that undermines itself with its own cynicism. Why, one may ask, was there no industrial action taken in conjunction with the 2008/09 SAG strike that sent so much work down this way? Surely that would have been as good a time as any for actors to show solidarity especially since evidently the MEAA have been set up here since 2006. Time to step back from all this hysteria and take a more reasoned approach

There's a lot of other people who stand to lose as well - non-film related industries also gain economic benefit from major productions, e.g. accommodation, hospitality, taxi drivers, schools (film often travel with their families, especially production people who may be here for years).
It all mounts up, especially in an economy the size of ours. If Warners or the like decide to forego NZ as a location, we all stand to lose. A major production can funnel a significant amount of overseas-sourced capital into NZ, and we simply do not have the capacity to bridge that gap internally.

The thing about that article, though, is it still refers to Jackson " threatening to take the production to Europe" a number of times. He didn't. He pointed out that the film's backers were considering it as an option, which was obliquely confirmed by a Warners comment. Consequently, I find it difficult to accept anything in the article as objective reporting.

It doesn't seem to have occurred to him that I was actually offended, and thus, sensibly I think, took my leave of the situation.
That's because people like Irishbill tend to regard others' motivations as similar to their own.
