  • Hard News: Rockin',

Merry Christmas to you Russell and to you all. My favourite thought for the close of 2007 is to be thankful for all that I have and to remember that we are already living in tomorrow's "good old days". Please help keep National from government next year. I can't bear them or their philosophy.

  • Hard News: Denial,

Quick admission - I am one of the abnormal few who hasn't had group sex. However, if Mr Rickards and Mr Shipton were indeed have consensual "group" sex, with no imbalance of power in the relationship, I wonder how those two men pleasured each other - as members of the group. That would have been a good question for Willie (is that his real name or his group sex name) Jackson to ask.
Oooooor, was it actually more a case of a couple of blokes, who just happened to be policemen, having turns with a very young woman.

  • Hard News: Denial,

RUGBY: The armchair coaches have been saying for that last couple of years that the ABs need to toughen up and 'get a bit of mongrel' and win the close matches. Well folks, they did all that in that game.
The fact is, the ABs played better than the French but lost to two bad decisions by the ref. When they received the unnecessary yellow card for Luke McAllister, they knuckled down, kept it close and waited. They even scored a try to Rodney.
And even when the ref failed to spot any infringements at all by the French in the entire second half, the ABs were still winning with 5 minutes to go. They were finally beaten by an uncalled, very obvious forward pass.
They might not have played their best game but if that forward pass had been called, the ABs would have won and we would all be saying, "Phew! That was close. We'll need to sharpen up for the semi." They were better but lost to a bad decision.
For some reason, the armchair brigade seem to think that the All Blacks are so high and mighty and arrogant that they should have been far enough ahead for those little things not to matter! They expect better of them than to have to wallow in the mere foibles of refereeing.
So, I see no coaching issue. We're lucky to have two good choices and the decision has been made. Just concentrate on pounding the living daylights out every other team in every other match - as they have been doing for the last four years, and maybe don't bother playing in the next WRC - they'll only poison us or the ref will cheat.

CLINT RICKARDS: If he thinks it's OK for three physically imposing cops to be having group sex, probably with 'devices', with a 16-year-old, he's just wrong. He's also bloody lucky he's not in jail. Aaaaaand . . . crucify me if you like, but if senior Maori are supporting him and that behaviour, maybe there's some explanation for the stats we see about Maori offending in these areas.

  • Hard News: The Clamour to Cringe,

I salute you Tim. I want to pay more tax and employ more people like you and pay you more.

  • Hard News: The Clamour to Cringe,

Again, back to the original post - the point Russell was making that all the policy, funding and everything else that goes into the education system does seem to be keeping us near the top of the educational pile on a world-wide basis. Yes, we have problems and a disappointing "tail" of under-achievers but it's a big ship that takes a while to turn. I beg your forgiveness for horrible overuse and mixing of metaphors.
As soon as you discuss raising taxes for education or health or whatever, you get howls from the right wing "less tax/user pays" fraternity.
I admit now that I think taxation is the most efficient way of funding public services and I agree that I would rather pay more up front for primary health services and education than later for poor health and prisons. Over simplified, I know but I'm sure you get my lefty drift.

  • Hard News: The Clamour to Cringe,

"Well, there's still plenty to cringe about - and with all due respect, I don't give a shit about Australia. But it's also fair enough to give credit where credit's due."

To hark right back to the beginning - couldn't agree more with this sentiment. I am so sick of hearing John Key/National/NZ Herald comparing us to Australia. Do they think that everyone in Aussie sits around comparing themselves and the latest statistics to NZ? The only real similarities between the countries are that we are somewhere in the South Pacific. Same goes for constant comparisons to how well Ireland is doing. Yeah! NZ is so like Ireland.
I think NZ is a bloody interesting place to be right now - far enough away from the rest of the world to be doing our own thing, but close enough to export it if we need to.

  • Hard News: Te Qaeda and the God Squad,

What's the saying - "There are no problems, only opportunities."
Get Te Qaeda some government funding to run Outward Bound meets Territorials meets Cultural Understanding courses - NZQA accredited!
Or hire them to help train the SAS. They could chase each other around the Uruwera National Park doing simulated war games.
Tama Iti is just doing us another favour.
