It's also worth pointing out that housing in close proximity to public transport is not only desirable, but required, for a lot more people in Auckland than you might think. High-density housing is preferable to the many exclusionary assumptions in the idea that Auckland can just keep sprawling ad infinitum, with public transport and services lagging far behind

Well, yes – I'll upload a couple of pix when the broadband is flowing rather than dribbling, but you really do have to work hard to get an outrage-stroking money shot, so to speak. God knows I tried. If anyone has a good picture of Transit Cloud lit up at night, I’m sure we’d all love to see it. At the very least, I suspect it’s more visually appealing (and less intrusive for nearby residents) than than a mass of klieg lights.

And that annoys me. Because there are perfectly legitimate if complex issues that can, and should, be raised there. When you’re prone to bagging the Mainstream Media as bloody-handed court stenographers of the Surveillance State, surely you should be rushing to ask such questions not avoiding them?

Oh, you mean the 1970's where The Truth maliciously "outed" Marilyn Waring, who could have been legally fired for being a lesbian if she wasn't an MP or charged with a crime if she was a man? I know it's terribly chic to act as if privacy has gone the way of men wearing hats in public but some history lessons could be useful in reminding people why it matters. Hell, if that's not your bag update your current general knowledge on people whose lives are literally put at risk by doxing and a particularly unlovely practice called "Swatting".

Absolutely. You can soundly argue that the law can’t anticipate technology, and how people will (ab)use it, and whenever legislators try they create more problems than they solve. Just look at the Copywrong PAS thread that refused to die, and is twitching occasionally. Already knotty copyright and intellectual property law is still playing catch-up with the very complex ways people use new(-ish) technology that was pure science fiction not so long ago. Maybe it always will.
All that said, if you need to get a legal opinion before deciding to be an arsehole anyway? There should be a law against people like that. :)
Of course, there’s another option: Plenty of things are legal but socially sanctioned. But in this particular instance, that might be a very long game indeed.

This is interesting, and thanks for contributing Nicole. But law aside, it's still depressing (if not exactly surprising) seeing people elsewhere taking the view that if it's isn't illegal, there's nothing wrong with it right? (Anyone who thinks that's an unproblematic position needs to Google "GamerGate" on an empty stomach.)
I guess I'm the kind of weirdo who's less offended by consensual sex than people who, in effect, filmed and published amateur porn without the participants' knowledge, let alone consent.

You're going to have to picture the kind of "it's funny because it's true" grin on my face that's physically painful because it happens so seldom. I'm certainly looking forward to another Film Society season where Jimmy's going to strongly like some things I can't stand (and vice versa) because he's got the trick of holding -- and defending -- a strong critical opinion without being a cock about it.

My feeling is that the changes to Cactus Cat are going to have a very positive impact. More space and a flown PA should really improve the experience.
Also really nice that everyone seems to have positively engaged with criticism and made a better experience of it for everyone. Would be nice if that didn't have to be noted, but credit where due.
