  • Southerly: Getting There is Half the Fun,

Singapore airport is indeed a lovely place to have a transit stop. Massage chairs! Oases of tranquillity! Comfortable public sofas!
I can only agree about LAX, but I think the transit experience has improved a little over the past couple of years. I had a worse time flying out of Dulles airport, Washington DC. Inexplicable and tortuous queues, stressed people everywhere.
As for Norway - what a fabulous country, and as Hilary said, a great time of year to be there with long, long days. Norwegian food is very strange. They are big on pickled herrings and the weirdest cheese ever - brown with a peculiar sugary texture.

  • Hard News: Kitchen Hacks,

My favourite kitchen tool is apparently known as a French oven. It was expensive but has been totally worth it and is in continuous service throughout the winter with a soup, stew or casserole in it.
I have a horrible cheap stainless steel roasting pan which buckles with the heat when you make gravy -- I am coveting a heavy copper roasting pan, but at a cool $619 on Amazon, it's not going to be acquired any time soon.

  • Hard News: Kitchen Hacks, in reply to ChrisB,

    Those scissors are total awesomeness!

I have been making a spicy tomato bean sausage stew often of late. It has a lot going for it - it's cheap to make, filling, healthy and tastes great re-heated for lunch at work.
    Recipe roughly as follows:
1 brown onion and 4-6 cloves of garlic
    Finely diced celery and carrot
    Half a dozen mushrooms
Half a dozen sausages - spicy eg chorizo are good, frankfurters or kranskys also good
Two cans of beans - any kind, I usually use white beans
    A slosh of red wine
A tsp of smoked paprika if you have it
A tsp of harissa if you have it - it adds warmth
A bottle of tomato passata plus a pinch of sugar

Gently brown the onions and garlic; add in the other veg; add the sausages and brown those too. Add the slosh of wine, then the beans, passata, seasonings. Add water as needed - it should be almost a stew consistency.
I've tried adding various other things such as a small handful of pearl barley to thicken it up (not really needed) and a slosh of pomegranite molasses (just because I had some).

    I mean really didn't everyone?

Some of us used mechanical advantage in the form of slingshots, Bart :-)

  • Hard News: Not good enough, Eden Park, in reply to Russell Brown,

No modern sporting franchise can afford to deter women and families.

Exactly. I remember going to a rugby game at Eden Park a long time ago, when I was a very young student in my early 20s. It was utterly awful. Any woman who even stood up or was in any way conspicuous was subjected to this barrage of grossly sexist verbal humiliation. I just shrunk into my seat. And I stayed away from any big sporting event there for at least a decade. When I finally went back - to a one day cricket game - I was really pleasantly surprised how civilised it was. I totally agree that no-one should have to put up with what Hannah did.

  • Hard News: Spread the Noise, in reply to ChrisW,

The only person I know who regularly uses 'sanguine' in conversation is my mother. Her Ilford County School for Girls education seems to have served her very well for vocabulary. On one occasion, she was summoned by excited cries from the biology mistress: Come quickly, girls! The paramecia are conjugating!

What is most challenging for parents (I reckon) is when your children know more than you do about certain things, w

I find that awesome rather than challenging. I have long ago ceded authority in new Zealand history, bird identification and knowledge of the subtleties of test cricket to my lad (13).
