  • Hard News: Grandpa,

You're lucky Russell to have spent a lot of time with your extended family as a child. My parents were pommy emigrants in the early 60s so we only had each other. Christmas was always a family time and now being away from Godzone it's tough having only our own small family here. I've felt the same pangs of loneliness away from home that you describe. Christmas is a fantastic time to see through the eyes of our small kids, but also a bittersweet time of missing our own families.
The summer holidays of my childhood always seem to shine brighter in the memory at this time of year!
Merry Christmas all, and thanks Russell and your colleagues for PA - it's really brought NZ closer to this far-off part of the world.

  • New Herald site,

WHat would we do without PA? I've been sitting here for days wondering why Safari wasn't returning the Herald (gulp, yes, it's my home page!). Firefox works better, but I thought it was some bandwidth issue here in de tropics, or getting out of NZ. What ever is wrong with NZ if they still print stuff by that woman...I thought your "trat" was meant to be tramp!

  • Flying Nun Moments,

growing up in the 60s and 70s, there was this talk of cultural cringe and NZ being an outpost of England. Russell, Public Address, the Network, and most especially this long FN thread have just put that argument to bed forever. What a culture we have!
So many legends from my upbringing in Ponsonby have been on this thread and so many memories brought back. Our cult album at school was AK79 - I've been looking to buy it again for the past 20 years (is it available Simon?). And I even saw mention of Otis Mace, Guitar Ace. Saw him at my first orientation in AK, 80, playing in the quad. Brilliant song about wanking saving you effort, money and time!
    Time to move home!
    Ian

  • Hard News: Copywrong,

Related topic. I travel a bunch and buy DVDs in all sorts of countries. I've just bought a new iMac - spectacular machine - and find that it will only allow me to play DVDs from other regions if I change the region on the DVD player (yeh, PCs are the same too). And then you can only change it five times. There just doesn't seem any sense to limiting the number of times you can change regions on a computer DVD player. Why do they do this?

  • Bledisloe Haka,

There is a very small group of Kiwis who live here in Barbados. Just off down to the local pub now to watch ($25 PPV) the Welsh test. Thanks for posting this - it' never fails to get our blood pumping for the tests.
