  • Island Life: Stop Making Cents,

Perhaps Newmarket retailers could round all of their prices up to the nearest hundred dollars. Would anyone notice?

Incidentially, WTF is Magnus Benrow?? I've been hearing the radio ads for years but haven't the foggiest what products and/or services they provide. Might be time for them to rebrand. "Magnus Benrow - if it's products and/or services you want, we may/may not have the ones you need."

  • Radiation: All this, and Lucy too,

While we're bashing free-to-air TV, it's probably worth noting that Sky ain't too flash either ...

I'm not bashing free-to-air TV as much as announcing my deep, all-consuming love for the DVD format. It's giving the power back to the people!

The sooner they can sort out this Blu-Ray/ HD-DVD bunfight the better, too. I certainly won't upgrade until the dust settles in a few years time - no-one wants to be one of those sad cases who were still ranting about the superior picture quality of their Beta player three years after the last movie was released on Beta video.

  • Radiation: All this, and Lucy too,

TV3 holds onto BSG for a year, TV2 only shows half a season of The Sopranos before pulling it? Oh well, thanks to the magic of DVD I can officially give up on broadcast tv.

Obviously it doesn't bode well for the networks and their ad revenue if too many people are buying the box sets (or renting them - cheers Fatso.co.nz), but since they have their heads so far up far their backsides when it comes to programming (__The Wire__ on in the early am anyone?), I don't have any sympathy. It's a genuine Golden Age for tv - shame no one told Canwest and TVNZ.

Besides, who the hell wants to watch something as dense and novelistic as The Wire or Deadwood rationed out in 50-minute snippets, once a week, and interrupted by commercials every 15 minutes? (And TV characters like Calamity Jane, Jimmy McNulty and Tommy Gavin from Rescue Me make those don't-get-drunk-or-you'll-make-a-dick-of-yourself ads redundant anyway).

  • Hard News: Aiming for mediocrity. Again.,

Having read all of these informative posts, consider me convinced - the waterfront is the only option that sparks my imagination

I'm actually quite excited by the thought of catching a train from out west to Britomart for a Saturday S14 game or test match and making a day trip of it. Catching a train to Kingsland or driving to an industrial park in Albany....not so much.

  • A question of sport,

The lack of rotation in the backrow is interesting considering the number of quality loosies at the moment - Holah, Messam, Blaikie etc. Would have loved to see what Sione Luake could have done at 6 or 8 with some regular game time. His work rate had improved dramatically in the Super 14 before he was injured. Maybe the selectors didn't want to blood anymore loosies unless they were recognised lineout jumers?

And what about Flavell - safe to write him off for the World Cup now that Thorne is back in favour and we have about 17 locks in the squad?

If Flavs is goneburger, Eaton seems the most likely candidate to be converted to a lock/blindside benchwarmer, he definitely has the skills and speed for a number 6.

  • A question of sport,

I have to confess to waking up in a cold sweat more than once with the thought of losing either Carter or McCaw. Carter's the points-scoring machine, but I think it would be every bit as disasterous if we lost McCaw to injury.

For one, there's no natural successor who could step in as captain - as much as I love big Jerry, I don't know if I'd want him captaining the side in a World Cup final. Despite the depth in the squad and development of senior players as leaders, I don't see anyone who could step up and lead the team - off the field, as well as on it - and handle the added pressure the way McCaw has this year.

If anything, the extra responsibility seems to have elevated his game – his individual performance in the Brisbane Bledisloe Test has to rank alongside Carter's in the second Lions Test last year as one of the most influential ever.

World Cup winning teams need a core of players who would make a world xv, but they also always have a couple of individuals players who get them over the bar - England would never have won in 2003 without both Wilkinson and Johnson, the same goes for Australia in '99 with Horan and Eales. Losing Carter or McCaw in '07 doesn't bear thinking.
