  • Hard News: Friday Music: An Outstanding Evening,

Ok, I just cried a river (and danced a bit too) to that clip of "In The Neighbourhood."

Sounds like home. Wherever I am. And for the first time in so many years.

  • Legal Beagle: Council Elections: STV Q&A,

I love the "Health Board elections are stupid" comment in the original post in the context of politics and elections in the United States of America.

Thank fuck, is all I can say really, that we don't live in a country where most every public post with legal responsibility is held by an elected candidate. What a mess...

  • Hard News: Friday Music: History, motherfuckers, in reply to Russell Brown,

Except it's a discussion from which Sweetman is missing. He hasn't attempted any real justification of what he wrote, let alone thought the better of some of the nastier parts.

As a point of interest, Russell - why should he? He wrote his opinion, for what it was or wasn't worth in that review - why should he now need to come into the debate its kicked up amongst a certain corner of the internet?

  • Hard News: So long, and thanks for all…, in reply to Keir Leslie,

Not saying Ardern’s right, but I’m pretty wary of the “not ready” label being attached here when it doesn’t seeming to be attached to men of similar or less experience.

Yes. The "Ardern's not ready yet" line seems to have a strong element of "because she's a girl" to it.

  • Hard News: So long, and thanks for all…, in reply to The Ruminator,

Can someone explain the popularity of Ardern?

I think a big point of popularity is that she appears different - she's not another middle aged man in a suit and a fake smile. When I think of Ardern I see someone who is, well, more like me - more someone I can associate with - than many other politicians. I think I'm not alone in feeling like this, too.

I don't think Robertson's sexuality will be a problem if he becomes leader. Yes, it'll give the talkback radio callers and Cameron Slater a big old sexy topic to run with, but those callers and Whaleoil commentators aren't going to vote Labour anyway.

Otherwise, I'd imagine most of the mainstream media would be leery of accusations of homophobia and probably keep it a non-issue - or even a positive issue.

I'd be more concerned about Robertson being the right person to wipe the sheen off Key. Has he got the steel to do so? I've had my doubts, but he's been performing well of late, so maybe...

The timing's pretty shoddy, and while there is never a good time for a leadership change this one should've been made some time ago.

And who next? Bryce Edwards thinks Cunliffe / Robertson is "pre-determined." Sounds reasonable?

  • Hard News: Violence in the streets,

When I was young I wanted to be young and famous. But now I'm older and not remotely famous I look at what the public eye brings to these young men and women - including the requirement to not just be well behaved, but better behaved than their peers, then I'm glad I never found that fame.

  • Speaker: Torture in the neighbourhood -…, in reply to Kumara Republic,

Indeed. As I read John's superb post I reacted with passion, fully agreeing with the call that this is why we can't ignore what is happing in our part of the world, because the breach of one person's rights is a breach of all of our rights.

But then my heart sank as I realised that people I know, people I love, people I work with, people I socialise with would read the exact same story and go "the scabby thief got what he deserved."

...and has this story disappeared amongst all the "will he or won't he" over David Shearer?

C'mon, Public Address, this is important. The cops drove this guy to kill himself, we can't let it go...
