  • Hard News: What to Do?,

    1. The Winston's compulsory super referendum wipeout is a classic example of why the whole direct democracy concept is flawed. If legislated the old fashioned way (as Australia had done) we would be massively better off going through this current economic crisis with a massive pool of domestic capital behind us.
'Leadership' would have resulted in us doing what's best for our nation and future generations against our short term instincts.

    2. In no way do I consider myself a redneck and I wrote in New Zealander.
I now live in Europe and I can safely say, whilst acknowledging my European roots, I feel culturally distinct because of my New Zealand-ness and wished to record that. Pakeha would work for me as well.

As for the Ethnicity v. Nationality point, it is somewhat undermined by the fact that the form itself included choices that are as much 'nationalities' as New Zealander is.

  • Hard News: Onwards and upwards,

TVNZ to provide regional advertising on TV ONE from 1st July.

On Sky? How can they do that? One satellite transmission, no?

Have the UK MySky and basically all the BBC regional channels are broadcast as stand alone channels, with your region as the default putting it at the top of the list.

  • Busytown: No news is good news,

trying to fathom its cartoons, most of them about sex and banking

Either you meant "banking OR sex" or I'm in banking in the wrong part of the world.

Anyhoo, I was intrigued recently to experience a few weeks at home with the olds where the Herald plays a big role in the daily ritual, whereas my normal routine is 100% digital news.
The major difference I noticed was how often the print ads got me thinking I needed to buy some good or service I didn't realised I was missing.
Maybe the switch the switch from print newspapers and broadcast TV to the interweb and digital entertainment is playing a subtle role in the current swing away from consumerism.

  • Hard News: Funky Seaside Village Revisited,

    Damn you Russell!

I've been in and out of Auckland since my 1st OE in '83 and the glass half full/empty view of the Seaside Village(s) swings to and fro. Recently, I made the mistake of reading this Herald message board which was a forceful reminder of one element of Aucklandness I detest.

Sadly, it can sometimes be easier being away when the pendulum is in the half-empty zone... but now thanks to you it's going to be a weekend of Sauv Blanc & marmite toasties in front of the rugby, with 'Warm Hand' on the stereo.

  • Hard News: Just shoot me,

Apropos, comedy gold from The Daily Mash

The tradition of parent-child feuds in literary circles dates back to Chaucer, who dubbed his son Ian 'a nancie boye both faire and true, who taketh it up the ers for a groat or twoe'.
