  • Hard News: God's squads,

Who was it that said the difference between a liberal and a conservative is having a daughter ?

Aha thaaaat explains a lot ...

having your details taken by a plainclothes policeman because you asked the candidate a question is just creepy.

Can someone clarify The Law on this? I thought we weren't obliged to give our name unless we were arrested? I would have declined politely and walked away. Would I have then been arrested?

And I loved the bit when he (the Cop) explained he just wanted his name (the questioner's) so he could run it through the computer in his car and see if he'd ever been in trouble with the Police before. FTP!

  • Hard News: Granny for Sale,

What makes you think tomorrow night’s debate will be any less stale and choreographed than the rest of them?

Because I think that although Clarke has seen the polls she's not going to let Don King determine the outcome of this title fight. The fix may be in, but she doesn't have to accept it. She's going to come out slugging (in a good way) in the hopes of winning by a surprise 'final round' knock-out.

If she wants to bring out the base on Saturday she needs to look like a winner. A 'draw' will not do.

__"We don't want our people just working in factories", said Tuigamala. "We want them starting to own those factories."__
Yeah, like seizing the means of production. I always knew National were closet Marxists ;-)

You is confusing seizing with starting.
National = starting things and creating wealth so we can all afford 10 minute hot showers
Labour = taking your sh1t off you and completely running your life and don't argue matey we're giving you Working For Families - we know what's good for you

    ;- )

  • Hard News: Granny for Sale,

I'm not having any problem watching the vids, other than wondering WTF was that one was for Craig : )

    Debate:

Having criticised Sainsbury for failing to moderate the first debate it's only fair to criticise Campbell for over-moderating. Just because he's heard the answers a 100 times already doesn't mean we have, so he should let the candidates answer without cutting them off and moving to his next set piece. And if you need to go into an elaborate set-up before asking the question then you're asking the wrong question.

I'm picking Wednesday debate on ONE will be a doozey. Clarke last nite looked like a championship prizefighter who knew she was going to lose regardless because the fix was in.

  • Hard News: Because They Could,

Given the efforts by the Republican Guard to secure the vote in 2000 by any means necessary the cynic in me wonders what they'll pull out of their bag of tricks this time. Obama is so far ahead in the polls they'll need some pretty strong voodoo to explain a McCain win. It will most likely be a slice of Rush Limburger: "We just told the pollsters we were gonna vote Obama" served with a side of The Bradley Effect.

Not that anyone will buy it. I predict a riot.

But then the cynical cynic in me wonders if the Republican Guard actually wanted the Presidency this time round. How else to explain the Palin/McCain ticket? With the US economy in the toilet it suits them to be out of office. In 4 years time it will all have been the fault of those tax and spend Democrats.

  • Hard News: God's squads,

What interested me most about the news of Inga and Jones' endorsements was that both networks included voxpops of PI factory workers saying "Yes, I'll probably vote National now". Did I believe them? Hell, no! It's just typical PI politeness - if men with mana come to your workplace and ask you to vote National you don't tell reporters afterwards "I'm not voting National". It's disrespectful.

It amused because I'd just been reading previously (the weekend papers?) reports of Mike Williams comments about how hard it was to get out the PI vote. They'd done research at the previous election and discovered that altho' they got them (PI voters) registered, many of them didn't actually vote.
[Which at the time of reading reminded me of Owen Glenn's claim that he had paid for a KFC lunch to get out the vote]

video of Helen Clark tripping over a chair at a shopping mall last week

What interested me most about this footage (seen on the news) was that Clark hardly missed a beat. She got straight up and carried on with what she was about to do. Kudos to her -- whenever I stumble I go through some elaborate charade for the benefit of anyone possibly watching. I get up and look back at the floor as if there was some huge chasm I hadn't noticed previously, I scan the horizon looking for 'the authorities' as if ready to report this OSH hazzard because by gawd if this could happen to me who knows how many children and old people could be hospitalised by this?

  • Discussion: On Copyright,

    FYI -

    full reuters story here

A new technology that essentially allows content owners to profit from piracy will get a high-profile test this month from MySpace and MTV Networks.

Instead of triggering the usual take-down notices, copyright-infringing footage of select MTV Networks programing uploaded by MySpace subscribers would be automatically redistributed with advertisements that would generate revenue for the companies. MTV Networks is the parent company of such channels as MTV, BET, Comedy Central, Spike and Nickelodeon.

MySpace is turning to third-party tech firm Auditude to deliver the technology through a combination of patented assets: a sophisticated ad-serving platform with a video-fingerprinting system that cross indexes billions of seconds of TV and online footage in seconds.

"This is a game-changer," said Jeff Berman, president of sales and marketing at MySpace. "We're going from a world of no to a world of yes while protecting the rights of the copyright holder."

  • Cracker: A Halloween story too cute not…,

What I suggest is, next year you hire a mini bus or three, & transport a shit load of kids from all over the region...

    LOL!

Yes, I can see it now:

Me cruising down the suburban streets in my 10-seater mini-van at 3 kmph, pulling up alongside groups of young children, calling out "Hey kid - do you want some lollies? Every kid likes lollies, don't they? Hop in, I know where we can get some lollies. LOTS of lollies! C'mon, it's not far from here, I'll drive you!"

An if that doesn't pull them in maybe I could compliment them on their great costume and tell them I know of a Best Halloween Costume Competition just up the road that I'm sure they'd win. C'mon - hop in - I'll drive you. Your mother said it was okay!

Alternatively: how about spending ten dollars in sweets and five seconds each with your kids' neighbours per year, you tight-arse philistines?

In my case they're not the neighbours kids because they don't have any. One year I actually saw the mini-van pull up, park on the corner, and all the kids came rolling out while Dad remained in the car listening to talkback.

Enterprising is one word, f-off is another ...

  • Hard News: Granny for Sale,

Any more revelations about Peter Dunne would be interesting

I hear he's sleeping with the daughter of his wife's brother's father - or was that the daughter of his father-in-law's son's sister? You hear so many scandals in politics ...

Something scandalous I saw with my own eyes today was 3 red cars driving down Ponsonby Road - all pulling trailers with 'Vote Labour' billboards on them. Not the 'greenest' of campaign ideas I woulda thought.
