  • Hard News: Works in progress,

All this money and effort is admirable but we really really need a solution at Newton road. The cycle path should really continue into town beside the motorways, thru grafton gully and also under K rd down to freemans bay.

There is A wee road being graded from the little bridge by chamberlain, westwards beside the motorway. Hopefully that's going to be what you're asking for.

  • Hard News: Some reprehensible bullshit,

What is most galling is that HOS readership is over 300,000 while Public Address is a bit less. And you know that any apology, correction or balance (if it were to come) would be buried inside the later pages.

I don't think people would care so much what a newspaper puts on its front page if we didn't all instinctively KNOW that this is how public opinion is shaped and elections won.

  • Hard News: TVNZ: Emptied out, in reply to Ben Austin,

I haven’t really understood why TVNZ has not been put up for sale yet.

Selling off a govt owned television broadcaster is a BIG THING. Once sold we lose control of the airwaves. People assume TVNZ wouldn't get much worse than it is already but that really depends on who buys it.

And you can't easily cut your losses and start up a new channel. It takes GENERATIONS to build the viewership of TVOne. Look at TV3, 25 years and still the little sister despite doing a lot of things better.

A better solution would be to turn around TVOnes decline - advert-free the whole of Sunday perhaps.

    RNZ still appeals

more broadly than one wee suburb, judging by their limited ratings research

Radio NZ's existing survey is far more comprehensive then the commercial radio survey.

  • Hard News: TVNZ: Emptied out,

Certainly the govt seem to have stripped away all the functions wihin TVNZ that made it difficult to sell this asset - TVNZ 6 & 7, the archive and now the Maori and PI programmes dept. Although the govt has sworn to never sell it, many wonder why we still own TVNZ because it's not doing the govt or NZ any good. The answer may be that there is no likely buyer. TV3 struggled to find one recently.

The thing is that one day government will realise how important television and media are to NZ and that to own the most popular distributor is immensely important. Would we want Rupert Murdoch or similar to buy it?

We no longer have a national TV broadcaster and that is shameful. The repercussions are huge - public education, weakened cultural values, political engagement, just having decent television for ALL NZers to watch and not just mainstream 18-54 year olds.

It's important to remember that our nightly television fix still has a big impact with the general public. No doubt many who read PA now watch the internet but recent research shows TV is still the main source of entertainment.
That the govt may soon suggest selling it off is definitely the point. Lose that and we lose control of the murky mirror that is television.

Current govts may be forcing TVNZ to be rubbish, but that doesn't mean future govts won't turn it around.

Everything this guy says needs to be taken with a pinch of salt. He seems to be constantly on message for his team, and his aims are strongly against a left resurgence. Pay no attention unless you want to be drawn into a room of mirrors and maybes.

  • Hard News: Interview: Glenn Greenwald,

Govt are specifically saying GCSB doesn't mass surveil. But what about NSA? Or another organisation using GCSB facilities? Words can be twisted so many ways, we could be paranoid, they could be lying.

The solution is either we trust them blindly or they open up about everything. But secret services like to stay secret for fear of the bogeymen learning too much (questionable scaremongering). Meanwhile, we the public cannot avoid doubting everything they say because it all hinges on a PM with previous form for dishonesty.

The GCSB would be better off without a dodgy PM making them look dishonest.
