  • Hard News: Didn't see that coming, in reply to Andre Alessi,

That;s a bit strawman isn't it? There are many other alternatives - reminds me of a scheme I once co-ordinated which was all about getting the huge stack of unemployed artist registration cards 'off the books' (analogue data storage meant big yellow cards but I never did find the books).
Back in those days art school graduates were really struggling in the period between finishing their education and starting work as either serious artists or in graphics design.
That strikes me as being somewhat similar to kids in the town I am currently living in who have good IT qualifications but really struggle to get into employment without prior work experience because employers generally prefer to bring someone in often from outside NZ, who has IT work experience though often not in the same exact field.

Anyway we paid good wages to the artists who undertook a big mob of different jobs around town as they got more confidence & the citizens gained more confidence in them. Starting off with big murals on swimming pools etc, then stage sets for productions which wouldn't otherwise have been able to afford such interesting & complex sets. Experienced people in each field were brought in to train & co-ordinate the projects. Some of the project managers did cop a bit of an income whack but they told me that doing the projects had been one of the most rewarding things they had done & usually it was just for 8 to 12 weeks. It took them back to their early years & rekindled enthusiasm.

We had a number of exhibitions of the young visual artists work some of whom went on to establish good careers.
The graphics mob undertook projects for other community organisations who wouldn't otherwise have been able to push out the pamphlets etc which they did.
The success rate wasn't 100% closer to 70% of the people who did these programs went on to find work in arts related fields chiefly because they had the experience and proof of it to show employers.
Not everything has to be regarded so grumpily as all bad.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: A Strange Road,

All of this puts me in mind of Saturday 29th November 1975 - pushing through the crush of bodies at the Windsor Asshole and remonstrating with fellow fans that NZ was no longer a fit place to live in.
Most were more interested in getting into the bog to whack up a potent mixture of number 4 & hep C that was so popular that year. Just about no one had voted, and few had interest in the reality - that the pig had won & he was going to put a lot of energy into making our lives as miserable as he could.
For the next 10 years I would bump into some of those people in all sorts of places outside Aotearoa, & they were far more vehement in their loathing of Muldoon than those of us who had sounded off about his win that election night.
The chief point of difference between then & now is that Muldoon had made his oppressive, human hating agenda plain long before he got elected.
Anyone who had followed his loony rantings wasn't in the least surprised when he concentrated every damn decision - from picking the colour of post office stamps to the right to decide whether opposition members were effeminate, into his slimy grasp.

No one could have claimed to be taken aback if the pig had selected 1zm's top twenty himself & then wheeled out the electoral commission chief to justify his censorship.

Many 2014 era kiwis will be so gob smacked by this ham fisted effort of the electoral commission to regulate art that they won't accept the decision was made as the result of a megalomaniac throwing his weight around in a hissy fit then making his pet pen pushers roll it out as if it were their own idea.

Yet what else could it be, this blatant censorship just makes no sense any other way.
There are a lot of songs about a lot of public figures, but the last time I heard of such a thing as this was way back when some pig loving official banned a comedic ditty called 'Spotty Muldoon' from the NZBC play lists.

As far as Odgers situation, does anyone know what the Law Society process is? IMO her alleged emails about getting Hager hurt or even killed by angry Chinese business people are illegal as well as being fuckin racist as all get up.
Such people should not be members of the NZ Bar or even solicitors.
Maybe someone who understands the process will lay a complaint certainly it seems lawyers have been struck off for a damn sight less although I suppose she will argue she wasn't acting in a professional capacity it does bring her character into question ie whether she is 'fit & proper' or whatever their rules call it.

  • Hard News: Dirty Politics, in reply to Kumara Republic,

It needs more than just another talkfest. Any serious solution would need something on the level of the Leveson or Finkelstein Inquiries, which in this case would probably take the form of a Royal Commission

I'm sorry I don't mean to have a go at your particular post there are many others in a similar vein posted in here & I find it frustrating that so many people appear to refuse to live in the real world.
Leveson is not a good example to make for advocating anything. If you have been paying attention you will see that the englander newspaper proprietors stymied Leveson's recommendations preventing them from being implemented - now or ever.

All the major englander political parties have gone along with the editors' traducing of democracy - nothing scares those pollies more than an angry Mirror, Sun, or even Daily Fail editor.
Sure chief labour Derp and wanna be king Eddy the egret Milliband, has made a fuss, pushing for some of the least effective recommendations, but he knows nothing will come of it. Doubtless he hopes the fish-wraps' owners won't take it too personal - they will comprehend that he has to be seen to oppose nasty Dave Cameron. In the tweedledee Vs tweedledum phoney war of the neo-libs.

I just cannot get my head around the dream world so many of us live in.

The rights that Kiwis ceded with a casual tick in the ballot box were rights hard won after centuries of fighting against oppression -they cannot be got back nearly as easily as they were given away.
It is frankly ludicrous to expect the fixed game so called democracy has become, can do much more than slighly reduce the velocity with which the bulk of kiwis are being reduced to powerless cyphers.

Some of the problem may be that we attained many of these rights (eg universal suffrage, equality of opportunity) by killing and oppressing the indigenous population, not by fighting & defeating the seat of power and those who sought to keep us under their heel.

There was no established seat of power in Aotearoa in the 19th century. There was just the vacuum created by destruction of Tangata Whenua society, people & culture.

Many Kiwis just don't see that the sacrifice and hardship endured by others was what enabled most of us to get that which has since been so carelessly forfeited since.
Of course not all our freedoms came from the barrel of guns pointed at Tangata Whenua - some resulted from guns pointed at young kiwis of all races including Maori, during WW1.

Many thousands of Kiwis learned the reality of the iron fist beneath the velvet glove courtesy of WW1.
Not all returned servicemen or the families of the fallen agreed with that perspective.

Yet following WW1 angry, disillusioned & distrustful citizens pushed hard to change the ways power was wielded in Aotearoa as well as the people who wielded it. They did so to prevent a recurrence of the situation where NZ citizens got treated as disposable units.
A direct upshot was increased support for the NZ Labour Party as it was then.
Yet here we are replaceable economic units once more and the Labour Party played no small role in the reversion.

This year, the 100th anniversary of the Great War, has seen considerable revisionismof the causes of WW1 & motives of those who advocated for that horror show.

In a typical "Double Rule" style of the neo-libs young people's genuine respect for what the diggers achieved is being used as the force to push for the over-turn of what many of the returned soldiers had fought for.

The reason I am peddling this 'War & Peace' of a post is not to be a 'wet blanket' attempting to rain on the Nicky Hager parade, but in the possibly forlorn hope that some will realise if change is to be effected, a vastly different approach than merely trying to shame the egocentric scuzzbags who have stolen our nation into submission, is required.

  • Hard News: Dirty Politics,

Quite frankly I don't understand the time and energy being wasted on Slater. There are no complex issues motivating him that require de-constructing, interpreting or analysing.
I reckon he is a selfish man who was once a selfish boy. Greed is his only motivation - as evidenced by his charges in the thousands of dollars for merely attaching his nym to piece someone else has written.
e.g. Money comes from a coalition of drug pushers interested in getting more kiwis hooked on nicotine - at least until they die of emphysema coughing out their lungs - hence the need to keep recruiting young Kiwis at the front into the addiction to cover losses due to attrition in older addicts, gotta keep the brand viable eh?.
"No worries", says the slug that'll be about six n a half grand a month".

Or some other multinational with the ethics of a diseased tapeworm (see murder of coca-cola workers by Latin American hits squads back in the 90's. Those scum had the gall to ask for sufficient wage to put food on the family table - natch they had to die) forms a consortium of like minded greed heads to oppose restrictions on the sale of obesity inducing no-nutritional sugar water to children. Cam is there ready to help - with his hand outstretched of course. Some may say the slug wanted to help the coca-cola gang because he needs everyone else to look like a slob too & that way he won't have so much competition to 'pull the gash' but I don't believe that - I reckon he did it because there was an earner in it and scruples don't fill up the bank account.
Simple stuff by a simple mind unable to comprehend the complexities of leading a fulfilling existence.

Just on the FairGo issues There seems to be a shonky group by the name of Spark sending out emails at the moment.
I just got one in my commercial bizzo inbox telling me to click on a link to read my account.
I have never signed up to do business with any such named entity so naturally I didn't click the link.
I did write back to them from a VM set aside for such purposes asking em if perchance they were based in Nigeria.

    pot=kettle=black!
All through this thread you have been using irrational arguments to divert attention away from the issues. You have resorting to emotion when others are trying to be rational and objective, imo that is the action of a whacker.
I called you out for it you called me troll. I just don't know how I'll get over being reduced to a cliche popular sometime last century but I guess I shall.
Keep it up. Yer only shooting yerself in the foot with yer continual asinine and obviously partisan posts. So by all means keep at it.

It is true I don't spend much time in here, I have nothing but contempt for dung beetles of any persuasion who lurk about the base of the beehive trough but occasionally something so egregious pops up that I feel a need to vent.

As in the evidence that this government has wilfully and continuously distorted the truth about everything they touch, solely for personal gain. There doesn't appear to be an ounce of public spiritedness about any of them and you are an apologist for these people.
If that is 'being a troll' /cliché then I will happily wear the handle but it sure beats living on a website where mostly there is little said of merit & the biggest danger is slipping on the oil of false bonhomie thereby dislocating a forked tongue.

  • Hard News: Dirty Politics,

As a non-aligned citizen who has long been disturbed by abuse of our democratic process by deliberate gerrymandering to gain seats by abuse of proportionality through so called overhang, the bit that needs to be dealt with judicially is the farce that national and Act are separate political parties.
It was bad enough when Brash was moved into ACT straight from the national party, but if that was effected by national party officials and enablers pressuring Rodney Hide by blackmail then claiming that act and national are two separate entities is insupportable.
In that case whoever 'wins' epsom should be considered part of the national share of the party vote in terms of proportionality.
Considered retrospectively that would make every decision of the current government that only had a majority of one, as being not actually legal. Altho of course if the constitutionality of a bill is dependant on the GG's assent rather than a house majority, the whole shebang would end up feeding grubby briefs for decades.

I would be content with an electoral commission result which determined the two parties were one and the same this time around.
