  • Hard News: Some things you may not know,

Totally stoked about a NZ specific creative commons finally on it's way.

Will try and make it for Hustle on Monday, but ironically depends on wether I have band practise :-)

    Yay - it's Friday...

  • Hard News: In the Music,

Robbery - what Heather was saying is that if you want to read a good break down discussion on the NZonAir funding then there are several threads at NZmusic.com which are both lengthy and filled with excellent comment - I think Heather saw little point in revisiting the topic and suggested some locations where these discussion have taken place.

What artists have they approached via Myspace do you know? I am actually curious as I would have expected to have heard something about it if they are approaching things in this way.

  • Hard News: In the Music,

my point is this music was shunned by a large part of the country at the time, but now its the joyous soundtrack to our youth.

Ummm welcome to reality - you think this only occurs in NZ? Or only in music? Or only in artistic endevours?

  • Hard News: In the Music,

I've found this conversation both fascinating and confusing at the same time.

As a muso myself I struggle to understand the seething resentment to providing a couple of copies of your work to the respective authorities. We tend to do so as a standard - didn't even realise there was a law requiring it - and we've always provided our material for free to them as standard too. I find it quite confusing as to why someone would not wish too - and more to the point why quibble over less than $20 in costs?

Part of my confusion about this seething resentment is that I see CD's to be very much a side product of music - we give away more music than we sell because it makes good business sense to do so (one of the reasons you can now buy the DOL on Itunes apparently - once we showed LOOP that the "word" was out there they came to the party). The more people who are aware of us means the more people coming to our gigs - which means more money (as gigs are easily more profitable than CD sales) and even the onselling of the original recordings at shows (yes people who have downloaded your music will also buy it if they like it).

I haven't even touched NZonAir as thats another cup of tea altogether (that we opt to not get involved with).

  • Hard News: No Bills,

That's one of the worst ideas I've ever heard.

Where as I find the idea of a full participatory democracy to be what we should be aiming for. We're a small enough country to actually manage the numbers but there are a few things which would need to be sorted out before any such system could be brought in.

We'd need to have free communication between all members of society available at any time - obviously not going to happen in our life times. We'd also need to substantially raise the average level of education in the country (to at least a degree level if not post-grab) for the citizens to be able to make actual informed decisions - yet again not going to happen in our life times.

  • Hard News: No Bills,

And let's not forget this is the woman who wanted to ban DHMO, dihydrogen monoxide. She's a well-meaning fool.

Hehehe - I still get the odd person calling me at work wanting to know why we haven't banned this terrible substance - they're usually all up in arms and are ready to take it to the highest level of government (cause we're covering up it's use!).

Most people who call about it have visited this site...
    http://www.dhmo.org/

Once they've simmered down a bit it's the fun part of explaining to them exactly what they're complaining about - some people don't believe you, some are sheepish, some just hang up straight away when they realise they've been had. Always provides me with a bit of a laugh...

Sorry nothing to do with the conversation really!

  • Cracker: Poke Me, Bite Me, Add Me,

I'm not interested in social networking sites - wouldn't touch a myspace page with someone elses 10 foot barge pole (won't even visit any of my bands myspace pages) - facebrook falls into much the same catagory.

If my friends want to know how I'm doing they know what my phone number or email address is and can contact me that way.

Maybe I'm a more private person than others of my age but I have no want for absolute strangers (ie anyone I haven't met in person) to know anything about me.

  • Stories: Employment Lore,

I'm going to keep this short...

Most confused job I've ever had - cleaning out septic waste tanks with a mate in the height of summer in the Wairarapa...

The hours were crap (pun intended), it was hot and sweaty in our plastic suits, we got great treatment from our clients (cold drinks, showers, feeds), and got well paid (I was better paid than anyone else I know at age 17!).

It was an eye opening experience which actually instilled in me a work ethic - met lots of great people and earned lots of money - but I'd never wish it on my worst enemy :-)

  • Radiation: Running with scissors,

Well to be fair they did have plenty of time to sort it out ahead of the event (as the antartic stuff has to have been prerecorded)...

But I agree that come judgement day a NZer will be the one of the mixing desk (and I probably know his name :-)

  • Hard News: Don't Panic,

That show is the sharpest thing to come out of the UK since Thatchers hair cuts IMHO :-)

Really like how dry and British it is - and dark :-)
