The public service should only employ Vogons - soulless mind-numbing buracracy is their idea of fun.

If I was working at that level as public service or private sector, it's the minimum treatment I would expect for my skills and services. I can't believe we're even discussing this unless its evidence of some sort of middle class guilt about liking scenery and comfortable acommodation while we slog our guts out to improve service. It's not as though the HNZC were dressing up as shepherds and nymphs at the Petit Trianon for crying out loud, it's hardly the friggin pleasure dome at Xanadu.

Have you ever tried to have a teleconference with 90 people?

I think a bit of junket for public servants is an investment in their utility and performance - otherwise its a pretty soul-crushing employment (I'm sure many on here can attest to that). Good Business Practice and why should a government department be any different. That this is a total media beat up is a fact as established as evolution and global warming (and yet, for some reason people keep wanting to debate them as well).

Perhaps Dot could kick her 17 and 18 year old "children" out of the nest to get a job and find their own places like the rest of us - then she'd have plenty of room.

Conferences do tend to be more productive if the surroundings are modestly pleasant.

    Sofie: LOL nice one.
Mikaere: no, of course not - a moko has an appropriate cultural context well known to most New Zealanders, and it's hardly something one can display or not at will. However, for the purposes of this argument, dress (a deliberate decision, particularly how it is arrayed) is a conscious semiotic gesture that intimately associated with the behaviour, enhancing it.

Tell it to the elderly and young kids who also have as much right to go shopping in malls.
