Hi Janet. Great to see you working on another valuable project.

David, I missed the broadcast and it doesn't seem to be on the RadioLive site. Can we get hold of a copy anywhere?

I welcome investment in infrastructure. Just future infrastructure like broadband and public transport, not last century's like roads. I'd be interested in hearing more about where the Infrastructure Council's priorities lie.

  • Hard News: A Taxonomy of Poo,

I thought Muldoonist was quite a good description for somebody who plans to borrow money to pork-barrel the construction industry.

Actually I think Rich is onto something, Craig.

Key's self-described mentor is the head of the infrastructure council. He then announces over the weekend an extra $5bn for "infrastructure" which seems to mean things that get built, and talks about wanting more private sector involvement in that work.

We know how effective PPPs have been overseas at tranferring public money into private pockets. Much more accurate use of "pork" than the Herald's, wouldn't you say? And it does sound similar to Think Big from here.

IIRC, the London cafe awards from last year had something like three NZ cafes in the five finalists?

Now there's my idea of an export industry - expertise.

I found The Vault upstairs at the Oxford end of Cashel mall quite good a few years back (out of date review) - surprised it had a cafe as well as designer stuff, and friendly staff.

Andiamo in Herne Bay was doing proper hot chocolate based on that type of paste. Theirs was from Belgium, I think, but it sure was impressive. Same for Il Buco's served from the counter-top slushy machine. Don't know anything about frappucino, sorry Suze.

Rob, was Jack Henderson working at Just Desserts when you went there? I remember him holding court over the backgammon board, subversive conversations and some compelling apple cake. Was one of the only places open really late, other than the Open Late with its wonderful outdoor fireplace and over-lit interior.

Not getting away with getting caught, surely.

I do love coffee, just in case that wasn't clear. And love is what Starbucks and anyone whose heart is not in it will never deliver. That's a difference you can taste as well as feel, and it's worth paying for.

  • Hard News: Food Show 08,

Fantastic coffee nostalgia, thanks folks. I was reliving staring through those latticed windows onto Queen St from old DKD, visiting their undersea loo, and surviving those stairs.

Also pre-drag Urbi Et Orbi, pinball at Brazil and Verona. Midnight Espresso, Matterhorn, nights at Havana when the bar still smells like a Cuban plantation. Thick hot chocolate from Il Buco's slushy machine. Quadruple shot shortie from the Arc. Discovering that even Palmerston North has more than one reliably good cafe these days.

back in the days when I was experimenting with vegetarianism (well, experimenting with vegetarian women would probably be more accurate).

Ah, Mr Hosking. I fondly remember both the lasagne and the impressive staff of Dominoes, not that I ever had any romantic success. I think wee novelist Kelly Ana Morey was one of them, wasn't she?
