  • Random Play: Goodbye to all that,

As years go its was a middling year. Enjoyed your writing and am annoyed I cant listen to more music. But from now on I'm more inclined to lump years together into decades and wonder how different 2019 will be.
    All the best.

Weren't they mostly busy having rationing and dying in world wars? Unless you count the expenditure on WWII and its aftermath, and I'm inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt on that one, it's hard to see where they had time to be selfish...

A romantic generalised notion, which some tickle their mind with, it lets them look fondly at their old granny, and caste scornful looks in the general direction of the parents.

I guess that large chunk of cash just sitting there, doing nothing, just waiting to be handed out to a bunch of selfish louts was just too tempting to resist for those politicians.
They lied to themselves first then the country. I've got this great idea, and I'll just use this money sitting here doing nothing(NZS) it'll produce an excellent return and will go straight back to doing nothing once I've completed this sure thing money spinner idea of mine. Yes it did happen.
The biggest con arsetist's always wore a suit and appear respectable. And people still fall for it.
Sorry Islander I meant '45 but typed '48.

Babyboomer will take a bite from both ends: They will draw down an increasing amount in superannuation. They will eat up an increasing share of a stagnant pie.

Well there is always the option of revisiting these to items in NZS.

    • no asset test
    • unrelated to past earnings' history

    Then there's this

And why is the pie stagnant in the first place? Because
they demanded for four years that the Labour Government give up its "excessive" surpluses, and it caved with more Working for Families and massive tax cuts. And then they voted in a good-times National Government which gave them another set of tax cuts, and promised not to cut their future incomes or their present benefits.

See that sort of generalising raises my hackles. Not all those born between the years 1948 - 1960 are as avaricious as you would seem to imply. Because we are a complex animal there are many, many variations between individuals. Sure in any groupings there will be those who follow a herd instinct, but not all. Those years are an example of failed idealism. Why did it fail? Maybe because the looming problems were still vague enough to get pushed aside, and the parent of the "baby boomers" were still in charge and had the gall to laugh indulgently at the crazy ideas of their children and just told them to get a job. Thus the present problems were amplified.
That, of course is not the full story, but Im not about to write a novel here.
I'm not trying to defend the behaviour others born in those years, or to shift blame, its just that it seems no one has an appetite for real introspection.
But this type of bone pointing ain't gunna help any or work.

Some people even told me that it sometimes might create problems if they would show their faith publicly.

Well I suppose a deathly silence followed by polite "Oh really's",
and conversation becoming just ever so slightly stilted could be construed as a problem.

Unless you are now going to tell an anecdote about someone losing a job. Are You?

  • Speaker: Rethinking NZ’s Emergency Aid,

    Who would coordinate it?

    I nominate Michael Jones.
Kyle suggested rather than sending money people would rather send themselves. A natural response if your friends/family have been thru not only a disaster, almost any tragedy.
I would hope that these people are guided by those co ordinating the relief effort as to what is the best way in which they could help.

Ah, so sarcasm is out. Will remember that when taking on other topics.
Clearly I have touched a nerve. Sorry for that. You live and learn, with a bit of luck.

No, not out, its just not a good opening gambit.
I'm just saying from my experience. Just trying to help out.
No nerves were harmed by your post.

As for having a prejudiced view of those of non-belief, that would mean I'm anti myself.

So why the attitude? Its a public campaign just like any other ignore it if you want. But extrapolating the atheists are a bunch of whiney babies when you consider yourself one.....Well I'll leave that in your hands.
