That was Tana Umaga as a young Wellington and Hurricanes winger. Except, unbelievably, Tana couldn't tackle then either.
I liked seeing Nonu out on the wing. Seemed a much better and more enjoyable spot for him.

Saving for things? I'm with Chaos on this. Having had a brother die of cancer in his early thirties makes you realise that there is no guarantee of making it to 65 -75
This is a bit like the vaccination debate. It is pretty clear that it makes sense for the entire population to be vacciniated but as individuals we are concerned about the (generally very small) risk of complications for our children.
Statistically the chance of you making 65 are very high in New Zealand. We all know people who have sadly died young but this is not the norm. The rational approach is to make *some* provision for old age, it is not necessarily supported by the emotional approach.

Totally agree, it's just that there are times that it gets tedious to me and interesting threads get subsumed by the volume.
I have never bothered to comment on it because I realise that:
1. It's not my business/blog
2. Others enjoy it - particularly merc and Riddley. Heck, I enjoy it at times.
3. Something about being in glasshouses - I am annoying bugger/smartarse, or so my teachers used to tell me.Anyhoo as Che says, bring em all back, please.

Funny old world. I thought Craig's reported entry on Kiwiblog was shear brilliance. If you are still reading at all Craig, kudos to you.
I also like his podcasts which have a different tone again. Interesting how the mediums filter perception.
Riddley and merc, some would see filling threads with an incessant stream of "witty" comments as also closing down debate. It's worth re-thinking how you perceive folk you disagree with online. All you have done now is make Ian Wishart and his supporters very happy.

As someone who is going to have to fork out on mainly high earners' retirement funds I think this is a pretty good budget for its time.
In fact, Bill English and his successors must be rubbing their hands with glee. Cullen has done all the hard stuff for them now, foregoing potential political gain now and structuring the economy so that the Costellos of the future can hack away at income tax without giving the economy a swift kick in the nuts.
I should also point out that there should, in theory, now be a lot more money in our economy to invest in businesses, such as Rod Drury's Xero, which has got to be a good thing.
Finally, it is not really property speculators slamming up house prices, it is cheap easy money coming in from overseas. Running high interest rates here only encourages that flow.

Graeme. I would be interested to know, what is the difference between a welfare state desired by Social Democrats and a nanny state desired of, um I don't quite know who? Is Field now more honourable in his appearance to you than those nanny statists he left behind?

Well, in the last month, yes. I read all the British press. Head and shoulders above the rest was the Financial Times.
Craig, I am sure we can find criticism of anything "modern" in the Telegraph. It was their blind hatred of Labour not their support or otherwise of the Tories that I was commenting on.
