  • Island Life: Books are our friends,

i'll admit to being on public transport, seeing someone with a copy of harry potter, and thinking, "must be a remedial reader".

Heh, that was probably me. The bus is the perfect place for reading childrens' books. I once got caught out reading the Guardian Weekly on the bus and had to put up with the most boring conversation ever from a fellow tree hugger.

    Never again.

  • Hard News: Just some links, really,

    On coffee:

What is unique is that, outside Italy, the Australian and New Zealand café markets are the only other 100% espresso-based markets in the world!

Someone not been to Spain then. The coffee there is the best and most overlooked.

One thing that has not caught on here is the habit of the truckies to kick off their days with a short black and a shoot of brandy.

Are any other bloggers finding this Gallery-blogging business creepy?

It is great to see the main news sites following the lead of Russell and co. PA sets the bar in terms of quality of writing and analysis and great comments participators to boot. I think Colin Espiner was a very credible and good choice for Stuff to kick off with.

Terence, surely this cannot be true:

Efficiency: On indicators of efficiency, the U.S. ranks last among the six countries, with the U.K. and New Zealand ranking first and second, respectively.

What about all the money wasted on faceless bureaucrats and unnecessary form filling by our GPs?

I seem to remember trying to give "The Devil Dared Me To" guys some money when they were selling patches on Dick's suit.

It was a very hard transaction to complete, unsurprising when you see the 20/20 segment.

That's a great piece by Craig. But I did enjoy the irony of his "and pay careful attention" admonishon to his listeners :-)

Any fifteen year old with internet access should be able to make a bomb.

This was the case even before the advent of the internet. Could even be the subject of one of Russell's monthly story gathering initiatives.

  • Southerly: A Slow Journey and a Quick Arrival,

Congratulations and good luck to all three of you.

By the way, who won the naming competition? I don't remember Robert being on the list of submissions. Which is not to say Robert isn't a fabulous name, it is, of course, but I am still hoping for Nonu somewhere in the mix (Dan Carter having obviously played himself out of contention).

  • Stories: Employment Lore,

Yes, and the crappier the job the more ridiculous the interview...

Leanard Rossiter had a good response to the "do you drink?" question.

    His Reggie Perrin response was:

    Only to excess.

He got the job at the sewerage works.

  • Hard News: Bad journalism, old stories,

To be honest, the Observer has been a bit of an oily rag, with a wafer thin veneer of respectibility, since Tiny Rowlands took it over years ago. The Grauniad, bless it, has also gone downhill since it moved its head offices from Manchester to London in the 90s (or even 80s). Lost a lot of perspective and sanity, in my opinion.

Is anyone else confused by those surnames Stott and Scott? Very hard to follow some of the articles. Maybe if we refer to Stott as "Shit Head" it would be easier.

As for meeting people, I only met Che Tibby for the first time two weeks ago and Stephen Judd of Stephen Judd fame on Tuesday. That being said, I don't get out all that much.
