  • Feed: My Life in Curry,

Anyone else remember the Bengal Tiger on Willis St in the early eighties? It was one of the few curry houses in Wellington at the time, although I have vague memories of a Chinese/Indian restaurant in Taranaki St.

When living in London I had many curries at Montys of Ealing. When a crowd of us arrived they would move diners mid-meal to other tables to accommodate us!

  • Hard News: Cranks, self-seekers and the mayor, in reply to Russell Brown,

What I meant was that there was another individual named Cameron (not Cameron Brewer) at the opening - he was apparently using his duck caller whenever the Mayor spoke.

  • Hard News: Cranks, self-seekers and the mayor,

I've seen reports of another Cameron being present at Panmure which seems appropriate to mention given the title of the post.

  • Hard News: You can Roughan but you just…,

Another confused editorial from the Herald this morning.

    Firstly it says:

Some may benefit from better public transport, but many would gain little or no direct or indirect advantage.

and the a couple of paragraphs later:

Virtually overnight, there would be less road congestion. Equally, to cater for those induced to leave their cars at home, planners would have to ensure that convenient, quick, reliable, comfortable and affordable public transport options were available.

So those that are induced to leave their cars at home would benefit from better public transport directly, while those travelling on the less congested roads would have an indirect advantage. Doesn't that contradict the first paragraph I've just quoted?

  • OnPoint: Re: Education, in reply to Russell Brown,

In some ways it's a shame that both axes are rubbish as looking at the plot from Danyl, if you take the points to the right of 25 on the x-axis (estimated class size) it appears to show a strong inverse correlation between class size and achievement.

  • Hard News: The Vision Thing, in reply to insider,

regulations about toasters and companies register etc should be separated out from the strategic planning element.

Watch out for another leaky building type crisis in a few years after the ex-Economic Development people put pressure on the ex-Housing people to lower building standards – all in the name of productivity of course.

There will be similar pressures on the ex-Dept of Labour people as OSH standards drop, again in the name of productivity. Of course the poor consequences of the merger won’t be seen until after the next election…

  • Hard News: Staying Alive,

Despite many words being written by Auckland Council officers, there is really only lip service being paid to building new cycle lanes. Take Ngahue Drive (borders Stonefields) as an example - this road was recently realigned to be 2 (narrow) lanes each way.

As a result there is nowhere for cyclists to ride safely - not even a footpath if travelling north-east. Surely it would not have been a big expense to have created a cycle-lane at the same time as the realignment.
