  • Hard News: The positive option of Red Peak,

    nope, nope, nope.

If you subscribe to the theory that a flag defines a nation

Are we a bicultural society or are we a multicultural society?
are we a colonial society or are we postcolonial?
    are we something else?

i don't know, i don't know enough to know. I know there are very wise people out there who study and think about things like this where are their voices in the flag change?

while red peak might be the triumph of social media while i might even like it, i think giving it my vote deny's our country a proper sit down & discussion about who we are, and what that means. Then how that could be defined in a flag.

The nationwide engagement programme never had space for this so i'll be voting no change, anything else (even if i like it) is a bit of a waste of time

  • Hard News: A cog in the Mediaworks machine,

Just took a look at their fashion content and it's amatuer hour
missing is the basic online fashion info of the outfits designer, where it was worn, and a runway comparison.
Also missing is wit, it's very easy to roll out snark when celebrities are playing red carpet. Snark is a fun game to play with friends on twitter, but from a site with content i expect knowledge & comedy.

  • Access: Persistent Polio,

my mum remembers having a whole 3 months off school when polio hit woodville and all the kids were kept at home just in case. it was a most boring time as the one thing you couldn't do was go out and play with your friends.

My neighbour meets up with a group of past polios every year, the group keeps getting smaller and smaller, and now they are older, most people just assume they have trouble moving due to age

  • Hard News: Judicial caprice is no way to…,

    Kaikohe , Kaikohe ?!!!
All you have to do is ramble a bit out of town and you'll find marijuana growing somewhere. it's so prevalent it self seeds up in that part of the north, I've found a random bush just minding it's own business, more than once. I'd hazard a guess that every second or third house would have a personal pot stash up there.

Kaikohe is a part of our country where the poorest of the poor live, where hope or dreaming of a future are not things people have or do. So to prosecute someone who actively brings hope, who brings the community together who does good stuff. This is just all the wrong.

To me it feels morally wrong, heaven forbid we as a country focus on actual criminals who are doing actual harm to society. No lets go after someone who makes the world better. it may be all the legal correctness in the world, but it's wrong.

this is the give a little page for her legal fees, she's appealing the sentence

  • Polity: A week on from the housing controversy,

I want to be clear on this: Nobody should read anything in our data analysis as being critical of Kiwis who happen to have Chinese ethnicity

    Well that's happened
HOW YOU GOING TO FIX IT?
How are Labour going to fix it
How are you going to fix the demonisation of not just chinese culture but anyone with asian descent?

and there seem to be a lot of liberal minded statisticians and professional data visualisers just on this site alone. Why not get a separate analysis before going live? Why not canvas a few trusted people from around the country about the potential effect.

  • OnPoint: Don't put words in our mouths, Rob, in reply to Steve Curtis,

Really ? You would know this how ? Speaking for all the asian communities sounds a bit of ' I know best'.

No the 'I know best' is anyone who has not noticed people who are hurt by all this. You must be living in a nice closed world if you haven't spotted people hurt by this and that those people are from a mixture of asian communities, of new immigrants and families who have lived in NZ for generations.

Yes NZ needs to start by registering the country of origin of house buyers, then if it's shown to have an impact (which people pretty much believe is true but believing is different from knowing) to do something about it to make owning your own house in the region you choose an affordable option for those who choose to live in New Zealand, either by birth or immigration. those 2 parts - a register and a possible future taxation/limits on overseas owners are not actually in question by anyone (well except john key and act) The problem is with what labour did, how they did it and who they hurt.

Why can't Labour step up and go yeah, we did this wrong. Our intentions were good but we did this wrong and the negative side effects are not worth this.

  • OnPoint: Don't put words in our mouths, Rob,

I'm so glad i don't read sunday papers, but i'm so sad to see words twisted like that. I think what Rob Salmond and the labour party have failed to do is listen.

Listen to people who are hurt & ashamed by a party that at it's roots is about people. They are so busy fighting to assert the rightness of what they are saying they didn't notice they've exposed some seriously ingrained racism in this country. Why are they not sad & embarrassed and apologetic about the hurt and pain they are causing all the many different asian communities in NZ.

Why is that not the lead on Rob's article, inside of an afterthought.
