  • Up Front: Oh, God, in reply to UglyTruth,

I’m only interested in English common law, as it applies to NZ

And English common law dictates that kids must attend Bible class? Sounds like rubbish to me.

I'd prefer a rational theist to an irrational atheist.

  • Hard News: The crybaby philosopher,

I assume Jamie Whyte is subscribing to the same newsletter as Alabama Republican Congressman Mo Brooks.

“We should not be dividing anybody based on national heritage or race. Rather, we should be bringing us all together. That’s what the melting pot ideal of America is all about. A person’s skin pigmentation is something acquired at birth that has absolutely nothing to do with the merits of the person of how one should vote.”

    borders on religiosity

I think I detect something religious about helmets and door zones right there.

    the goat curry

I've been there twice now with groups of Indian colleagues and everyone (except the vegetarians - duh!) speaks highly of that curry. Done 'Indian-hot' naturally. I can't wait to go back myself.

  • Up Front: Dropping the A-Bomb,

In 1985 my girlfriend got pregnant because of us being young and not very experienced at this whole sex thing. We were both 17 and I don’t think having a baby was even considered. Since we were both at the same high-school, we went to see the school nurse who wrote her a referral to the women’s clinic at the local hospital. The following week we went there and she had the abortion.

From an individual woman’s point of view, I don’t see why it needs to be more complicated that that. I’ve not had much reason to reflect over abortions on a personal level since then. However, now my daughter is a bit older than my girlfriend was back then and if she were to want an abortion I’d like it to be as easy for her here in 2014 as it was for my girlfriend in Sweden 30 years ago.

I heard they were hacked and that message may be bogus.

    Honestly, who knows!

    Good discussion on ArsTechnica

  • OnPoint: The Big Guns: Truecrypt and Tails,

In case you weren't aware, TrueCrypt is no longer recommended by its own developers. They recommend using the built-in functionality in Windows and OSX instead.

WARNING: Using TrueCrypt is not secure as it may contain unfixed security issues

This page exists only to help migrate existing data encrypted by TrueCrypt.

The development of TrueCrypt was ended in 5/2014 after Microsoft terminated support of Windows XP. Windows 8/7/Vista and later offer integrated support for encrypted disks and virtual disk images. Such integrated support is also available on other platforms (click here for more information). You should migrate any data encrypted by TrueCrypt to encrypted disks or virtual disk images supported on your platform.

  • Hard News: What rules are these?, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

And sorry, but where’s the public interest let alone news value in (gasp!) Actress X. goes out for coffee or picks her children up from school in sweatpants and a t-shirt rather than a high end couture gown?

There are literally hundreds of magazines, websites and TV channels almost exclusively dedicated to this, so there certainly is a lot of interest by the public (not the same as public interest, I guess).
