  • Polity: Too much to swallow on the TPP, in reply to Alfie,

I think it's something like "industries that have gone away already".

with Russell absent no moderation was possible

Yeah that's the key. With no guiding hand getting rid the most derailing comments it would quickly devolve. I don't believe Russell would have pulled that trigger if he wasn't about to step away from the keyboard, not so quickly anyway.

Unfortunately feminists seem to demand exactly that.

Please tell me about more of your funny ideas.

Who gets the upside? It seems like TPPA was originally a pretty ordinary deal, but then the Americans got involved and it went crazy. I see why they want it, but why do we still want it?

Can it just be about Groser wanting a sweet job once he finally leaves our parliament? He's already demonstrated unequivocally that he will cross pretty much any line to feather his nest.

I mean, do people really believe the Americans will ever open their borders to us? They don't seem to play that way. We should just have separate agreements with the other less belligerent players.

  • Hard News: Sunday in the City,

I had an apartment on Parliament St for a few years in a fairly lovely but slightly threadbare building which was converted (I think) in the 80s from old law offices. That was a really great spot. Nice apartments seemed few and far between unless you had serious money to burn every week though.

As an exercise I suggest everyone, especially those who’ve never lived in the city, go and have a look on trademe for city apartments. You’ll quickly discover that almost everything is total garbage. I don’t know why our council rubber-stamped so many dingy low-ceilinged new apartment buildings, surely they always had some leeway to say “no, this building completely sucks and you have to make it nice because we won’t let you blight our city for decades to come with the likes of it”, if they didn’t have that leeway then what’s the point of any of it.

I always felt like my partner’s face was so beautiful every time she took off that mask.

I had to get written permission to film in one of the radiation rooms at Auckland Hospital, I haven’t got any of that video broken out, but there’s some footage starting around 4:34 in this longer thing:

If you have very fast eyes you’ll spot pixels being activated by the radiation.

  • Hard News: We can do better than this, in reply to Robyn Gallagher,

Meanwhile, W. Oil gets $6500 a month for writing about how smoking is cool.

Worse than that, he gets the money but someone else ghostwrites for him.

Craig, we don't always agree on TV shows, or on what constitutes fair game in them, but this is a really fantastic piece of writing, sharp thinking, clear, and to the point. Thank you.

I do also think there is at least some element of truth to what Jane says. But you're right, lets keep the dictionaries on their shelves.
