  • Cracker: "It says 'Let's b friends', and…,

Feel compelled to weigh in right now to the defence of James & Karen who purchased RDU not long after I left in 2006. The station was never being "run into the ground", in fact every year I spent there the quality of it's output only improved. It was however being dicked by the management of the student union who had come to a stage where they neither understood or cared about owning a radio station. They were more interested in the output of the deep fryers and the coffee machine downstairs. Everyone working at RDU in 2006, including the sales team, were passionate talented individuals. It was the student union who had no vision for RDU.

James & Karen should be respected for taking a risk and saving the character or even existence of student radio in Christchurch and on campus. It could all so easily have degenerated into a Hamilton or even a Wellington situation where only low power true student radio exists (Active maybe in the b-net but it has no affiliation with Vic uni).

From what I've heard the staff feel valued, something I only experienced from co-workers, certainly not the student union management. There's also been significant capital investment under Fabel's management.

You see! One still feels passionate about the damn station when one should be concentrating on something else... Isn't live and on demand video streaming the future anyway... anyone? no? okay.

  • Hard News: A revolting piece of shit,

The Dirty Sesh news manages to make the rumour of the Feelers covering "Right Here, Right Now" as the RWC theme tune seem like good music news in comparison.

My beef about the RWW song is not with The Feelers (for once), but if it is "Right Here, Right Now" the song writing royalties will not go to a NZ musician. I'm sure a new or existing NZ song could be used that would satisfy both a national and international audience. That's a crap load of money gone wanting for a NZ artist. Shame.

  • Southerly: We Haven't Forgotten You Christchurch!,

Golly gosh David. Those are some awfully complimentary statements about me and the show. Thanks for your thoughts. I'm often feeling around in the dark when it comes to developing new ways for the show to reach audiences so it's nice when someone shouts back that I'm doing the right thing. Very cool to meet you both, do come back soon and have fun at the Chch launch this evening.

Blimey that is cheap Laphroaig. Was going to pick up a single malt through duty free later this month but none of them come close to $55 including delivery.

  • Hard News: Going Underground,

The Colbert Report is also blocked from the Comedy Central website leading me to jump to the conclusion that it is SKY TV who made the request. SKY TV acquiring the rights is the only thing that has changed since last week. C4 has been happy to let Comedy Central stream it thus far.

    It is an outrage!

My new Hulu.com work-around is doing the trick but one shouldn't be forced to take to the high seas...

  • Hard News: The Public Bad,

Frustrating that RIANZ, IMNZ and in particular APRA purport to represent the copyright holders but have no mandate from their members (apart from the record companies in RIANZ's case) to hold their current stance.

The sooner artists can find more ways to weed out the middle men in their industry the more profitable it will be for them in the new digital future.

I'm dismayed at the lack of progress we have made in new broadcast mediums such as streaming on demand and podcasting compared to Australia and the US. The industry players still have not nutted out agreements that allow traditional broadcasters to explore new ways of getting creative content to wider audiences.

From my standpoint it is the artists who lose out first.

  • Island Life: A boycott would do nothing,

Weird people are saying they didn't catch the whole women's road race. I saw the whole thing live on the TVNZ sports extra channel on Feeeeeview. All wrapped up by 9:30 on Sunday night. The English bird won.
