  • Speaker: Vote Grey Warbler,

Okay, we do have to share the kuaka with the Alaskans but as Kim (of Love is...) or someone of that vintage (proabbly someone working for Hallmark) said

"If you love some body, let them go. If they return, they were always yours...."

  • Speaker: Vote Grey Warbler,

What, no mention on the list of our champion aviator the bar-tailed godwit? For pluck and determination, you can't go past it.

Here's where it flies, literally on a wing, prayer and a very plump body

  • Random Play: Diana of Wails: The…,

I'd been in my study all afernoon trying to think of something decent to tackle for a looming media studies essay on global media events. My mother rang and told me the news. I still feel a bit guilty at how relieved I was at finally having such a great topic. The essay went on to be my only ever academic publication. And to compensate for my callousness, I framed an lovely invite I had kept from a media reception years earlier with C and D.

Just a note on the EPMU list of rates. I put this together about 2 years based on rates as reported by freelancers. It's now a tad out of date but we are updating the information, again by surveying freelancers and/or editors. On the SuveyMonkey site, I've listed every major magazine, from the ABC list, and the metropolitan newspapers.

If you'd like to plug in any freelance rates you've been paid, please go to
    http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=VWPJ3H0jBd_2boKuolLNPotg_3d_3d

We'll be reporting the rates in the Freelance Market newsletter, and also on the EPMU site and via journz.

  • Southerly: Late for What?,

I did just recently stop a friend calling her son Huck. I tried to point out as diplomatically as possible that Huck King wouldn't really work in a New Zealand playground.

The other tried and true test --to see if your chosen name is of its time, try calling it out in your local supermarket.

  • Southerly: Late for What?,

Years ago a newly pregnant friend was told by her father-in-law to read the death notices in The Times to get ideas for her baby's name. It works a treat - it's the names of each generation's great-grandparents that roll back into fashion.

There is hope for Gaylene, Kaylene, and Raylene yet.

  • Hard News: Public Address Radio,

I agree with James entirely. I regularly let my kids walk by themselves to the local park, but it's via the rugby field and not on the roads. Why? because I'm far more concerned about them being bowled by a car than some random killer lurking behind the goalposts.

Oh and on cars, I yesterday remonstrated with a driver whom I had to flag down to stop at the school pedestrian crossing where I was waiting with my daughter and assorted other kids."There are others that go faster than me," she said, obviously put out at being told off.

What an idiot excuse -- so the other people will make more of a mess, when they don't stop, and that makes her action okay? Bit off topic, but I see people like the woman with the MARTNA numberplates as far more of a threat to my kids than Mark Burton.

  • What do you want them to play at your funeral?,

Talking Heads' "Road to Nowhere". My (many) religious rellies would be outraged ............"but it's all right"

And for the weepy bit, I'd like someone to read 'Heaven' by Brian Turner
