  • THIS JUST IN,

So ... Dominion Post has revealed the secret evidence. It's pretty shocking. I still agree with Jon Minto, I think. why let it grow? Why didn't the police step in and talk to Tuhoe elders or Tuhoe police reps before the nonsense intensified?

I had no idea that Tuhoe harboured such a grievance - even though my grandfather farmed within the confiscation line not far from Taneatua.

However, when I saw the confiscation line as a child, part of me was aware of the injustice of it. Haven't heard much about it since then and yes, it is a blatant injustice that has I guess been unresolved.

  • THIS JUST IN,

What do you all think of Hager's analysis of the terror raids in today's SST?

"The problem appears to be a mixture of poor judgement, preconceived ideas and organisational vested interest."

I liked his backstory to the raids. Trouble is I don't know how dispassionate he is. Having seen John Campbell waving a bundle of leaked docs, which he said contained SOME quite shocking content, I still wonder if we are getting both sides of the story and feel quite frustrated by this.

And as John Minto said, why didn't the police step in earlier and dismantle the military camps?

  • OnPoint: Cooked goose, chicken, etc.,

<quote>Mediawatch examined this issue today. Worth a listen, if just for closure, and an interview with Deborah.<quote>

I heard Media Watch yesterday - good - but when I caught up with Phil Warrington's Media item on the nine to noon (nat rad) website, I was horrified by his (what I considered) shallow response. Would Kim Hill have let him get away with that?

I must be getting old and bitter - watched Close up t'other night and lead item was Tom Scott and Bob Jones commenting on the arrest of Barrymore.

I'm ancient enough to remember better days.

  • Hard News: Graceless Islanders,

Some are broadly 'conservative', others 'liberal', but they only interest me to the extent they provide a forum for lively, well-considered and interesting writing rather than impose some dull ideological orthodoxy - whatever it may be.

OK but I had come to expect a certain liberal stance from the Listener in the nicest possible way and then all of a sudden things changed and I was reading a different mag. Moreover, you could hardly accuse the Listener of providing a forum for "lively, well considered and interesting writing" - not from the prominent Black Page anyway. As I said originally, I was impressed by the smacking article in the current N and S - a magazine I often find inimical to my liberal tendencies! Actually I find the reactionary comments of Black much more likely to confirm my bias than a reasoned, researched article by a righ winger.

  • Hard News: Graceless Islanders,

if it were overtly political people would filter it differently. because it's styled as it is, it's more like just a slice of life 'that's how it is' kind of thing. only it always has a political edge, is always redneck populist 'anti-PC', and always just happens to be pro-National.

Yeah, that's what has always outraged me - that someone in a previously liberal mag is given a weekly platform to mouth conservative views.

  • Hard News: Graceless Islanders,

I agree with you about Joanne Black and Pamela Stirling. When I saw that North and South had a really good article on the smacking issue/child abuse something in me snapped. N and S is supposed to be the right wing one but Black has been sneering at the smacking bill for weeks now with no in-depth thought at all - I know it's just a bit of a gossip column but it still made me see red and I've just sent a long letter to the editor referring to their media kit and how it describes the readership as having a female skew and a well off baby boomer factor. As someone who fits both those bills (apart from the well off!) I'm incensed that the watered down mag we now have is considered to be targeting me! Arghh! I've been reading the Listener since about 1970 - it used to be GREAT.
