  • Hard News: The Engagement, in reply to Ben Gracewood,

Pressing question: in the spirit of Brangelina, are they Kills or Wait?

Brad/Angelina so Wills/Kate ends up closer to Wilk or Wikat.

Ben with Jennifer made Bennifer. Which in this case would equate to Wate. Though less likely because Kate was previously nicknamed Wait(y) Kate(y).

Kills and Wilt don't quite fit the pattern - male name first and initial letters from each name. But +1 for Wilt anyway.

  • Speaker: My People, in reply to Jackie Clark,

Just for the record, there is a baby boom on now and more than just in South Auckland. There will be around 10000 more babies born in New Zealand this year than there was in 2001. http://www.stats.govt.nz/browse_for_stats/population/births/BirthsAndDeaths_HOTPJun10qtr.aspx

Since 2007 there have been more than 60000 births each year in New Zealand. Other than brief baby bulges around 1971 and 1991, we are now at totals not seen since 1959-1962. Birth rate has now risen to 2.2.

The baby boomers have almost finished having their babies or it will be grandchildren (and great+) arriving now. Numbers may well drop again with the echo of the lower number of arrivals in the 70s and 80s.

I apologise for not doing all the references but this white background gives me a headache.

  • Hard News: A few (more) words on The Hobbit,

    @Jonathan King

Thanks for your return comments, search party now stood down. I was wondering if the "Thread of Doooooom" might appear to have been slightly oversold in terror factor. You had to be there at the time to get the whole vibe of the thing. Plus the worst of the posts were deleted so how some of the people here remember it happening is not the same as how it would seem events unfolded to someone viewing it now.

RE Spada responds to MEAA's newsletter to members:

The later message dated the 28th October on the NZ Actors Equity website appears way more reasonable than that MEAA newsletter.

President Jennifer Ward-Lealand expressed her gratitude on behalf of New Zealand performers for the Government’s leadership over the past two days toward negotiating a positive outcome with the studio executives and producers.

"I think in many ways, the issue has helped build public awareness of the importance of the film industry to New Zealand, and the industry will be stronger as a result".

“Actors Equity, will take time now to reflect on the events of the past few weeks, and to review these with members, and our colleagues across the production spectrum”.

  • Hard News: A few (more) words on The Hobbit,

In my humble opinion today's piece by Derek Cheng is a reasonable attempt by a Herald columnist. A Hobbit's tale (revised). Might quibble on a couple of points but okay overall at presenting 'what really happened'.

And off-topic, apparently we have been too mean about our MPs so we are not allowed to know specific details about their travel perks anymore.

    Just for the record:

There are other amendments to the Employment Relations Act in progress. For example the ER (Amendment 2) bill currently with the Transport and Industrial Relations Select Committee. Trigger date from memory is 1 April 2011 so too late for contracts being signed now.

Anyone tell me what I've done wrong by looking at the above?

Link does work, it just doesn't look right. Its two square brackets at each end and not round brackets and no spaces.

Heather: so you've gone from Sydney's north shore to Auckland's? Me too.

Yes. Though only had two years in Sydney. Was in West Auckland before that (Yes, I know could have just gone across the bridge rather than via the puddle).

    Originally from Mataura (Southland, NZ).

A CTU campaign for fairness at work on the 20th October 2010 has not registered anywhere in the media.

    Disagree with that opinion DexterX.

The rally at TelstraClear Events Centre was on the TV news that night http://www.3news.co.nz/Employment-protest-Live-updates/tabid/423/articleID/182209/Default.aspx and was on page 2 of the Thursday edition of NZ Herald. (Front page was about mortgages).

Estimates by the unions were that in total about 22,000 people gathered in various places around the country.

The Hobbit story took over as the "union issue".
