  • Hard News: Because it's about time we…,

And in related news I just got the regular newsletter from L'affare saying the global financial crisis has brought about sharp increases in commodity prices, including a 71% rise in coffee futures since June. They say their coffee will go up by $2.30 per kg. Guess we'll all be paying more for our coffees.

  • Hard News: Floating the idea,

I don't know how widespread this is in primary schools.

A number of schools in Hawkes Bay are doing this. We've had some professional development in the Perceptual Motor Programme Jackie was talking about. There are certainly kids out there who benefit from it.

  • Hard News: Floating the idea,

We still operate and maintain our school pool which in Hawkes Bay is a neccessity in February. It is at great cost to our operating budget however and it is understandable that some schools are closing theirs down. The health and safety regulations and constant monitoring of water quality is also a reason for schools to opt out. As a teacher I feel less than qualified to teach swimming and have always felt less than effective because I can't get in the pool with the kids. That said I'm happy that at our school all children swim every day for at least 5 -6 weeks of term 1 and 2-3 weeks of term 4 but then our weather certainly helps. On a related note State Ins. and Swimming NZ are doing a concerted push on professional development for schools with swimming teaching and the good news for us is that is all free.

  • Hard News: A few (more) words on The Hobbit,

Quite a few received a well funded education, graduated from university without student loans

I have to own up to this. When I trained to be a teacher I was paid and had little or no fees to pay. This is the way it was for all teacher trainees up until sometime in the 80's. We had to teach for 2 years as part of the deal which for some was a small price to pay before heading off. There were 300 odd students in my year in one teachers college so multiply that around all teacher's colleges and it adds up. Not all lasted the distance though.

  • Hard News: A few (more) words on The Hobbit,

Yes, I'm kind of bemused at the sour-puss-ness surrounding the impending RWC

Well for me some of that is generated by the fact that my working conditions (school terms) have been changed this year to suit the RWC and while this may have little effect on the 5 yr olds in my class it's going to affect a great deal of senior students doing NCEA, more so perhaps than the industrial action the PPTA took last year but were criticised heavily for doing so. (Term 4 begins the day after Labour Day and gves them very little school time to prepare for exams.)

  • Hard News: Holiday Open Thread 1: Beach…,

Hawkes Bay weather brilliant, family around, lots of garden tending (great crop of tomatoes, beans and strawberries this year), planning trip to Canada in April, bike rides, read Keith's biography and coolest of all was a flight in a little Cesna yesterday around Napier with a friend who is a pilot and has hired a plane for a little holiday jaunt around the lower NI. Interestingly these holidays have seen me playing the least amount of music over the summer than I ever have and what's strange is I don't miss it much. Anybody want a mid 70's P Bass? ;) Today I went to school to check on the servers. Couldn't get away quick enough.
