  • Hard News: The People's Poet is dead!,

Rik Mayal and the Young Ones \ Commic strip brought great joy during pretty bleak times in the UK. Feeling nostalgic and very sad today.

  • Speaker: Facing the floods,

You've pretty much nailed it there Russell. Govt have initiated a Mexican standoff with the Council and the long suffering residents are the hostages. Dalziel has the toughest Job in NZ politics right now.

  • Hard News: Holiday Music: Pop TV Lives,

Anyway here is my favourite bit of German rock TV from the 70's. I had mate called Rhys who used to play guitar like this and at the time know one really understood why. I am Damo Suzuki!

  • Hard News: Holiday Music: Pop TV Lives, in reply to Russell Brown,

I remember tuning in to that edition of Something Else and being totally mesmerised by that now Iconic performance of Transmission. One of those life changing TV moments. He may have had an ego the size of a small planet but Tony Wilson was a pop genius who broke the mold of pop TV in the UK . Here's She's lost control from the same show. Curtis meant it maaaaaan!

  • Hard News: Karen, and being kind,

Sorry to hear about your loss Russell. A very touching to tribute to your sister who sounds like she was a lovely, warm person who will obviously be hugely missed. Best of wishes for the festive period.

  • Hard News: Friday: A happier place,

Thanks for evoking fond memories of local youth club discos in the late 70's, where memebers of all the various sub tribes (Punks, Teds, Mods Skins etc ) would stop scowling at each other and head to the dance floor and skank in unison whenever the DJ dropped one of those Marley tracks. Great tunes, great times, great memories.

Ok against my better judgment i just took a minute to read that Du Frense blog piece and now understand your perversion. The guy is a 24 carat plonker.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: I like your old…, in reply to Russell Brown,

I’ve only seen the Fall twice (back in the Early 90’s) and both shows were exceptional, however viewing footage of more recent show’s I’d have to say that Mr Smith may be spent as a live performer. God knows he’s tried pretty hard to achieve that aim over the years. There is a difference between live performance and studio work though. Age and increasing substance abuse induced de crepitation is less of a barrier to recording good stuff to performing it live for obvious reasons. I loved Bowie’s latest stuff but I wouldn’t be queuing to buy a ticket to see him live though and you’d never rule out the Fall from producing an absolute gem again, if Mark E Smith hangs in there for long enough, even though it may be too painful to endure him performing it live.

Life is indeed too short to read the curmudgeonly outpourings from the meat and two veg world view of the likes of Du Fresne and pretty much anyone who writes for the Daily Mail, no matter how unintentionally hilarious they are. Also are the Fall the only band in the world who’s fans look forward with enthusiasm to their latest release? Smith’s borderline insanity, prodigious output and policy of regenerating his band more often than Dr Who keeps Fall anoraks constantly craving new material.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: That Hammer Time,

My surreal MC Hammer encounter happened when I saw him at a music festival held in a medieval square in Brasov, Romania in 1995 (along with Kenny Rodgers, Status Quo, The Temptations and 2 Unlimited). Dont ask how i ended up there, its a long story. Although Hammer was way past the height of his fame and I had little interest in making the effort to see him, what i witnessed was a truly amazing spectacle. His stage set had a cast of thousands and to this day I rate it as one of the loudest tightest and funkiest gigs I've ever seen. The sheer energy of the performance obviously a testament to his uninterruptable work out regimes
