  • Hard News: A solution in search of…,

Indeed, the whole Quay Street strip from Britomart on is a bloody eyesore, thanks to shoddy, nasty looking apartment developments. Another example of the de-beautification of Auckland City that is taking place without check.

It's just a shame that the ball was dropped from the lofty heights of some reasonably (for Auckland) visionary design concepts for the Aotea rejuve. Seems like the old concrete square with some readilawn vision was adopted because of budgetary constraints. The same thing may, unfortunately transpire on Queens Wharf. Better than dropping a hundred mil on a bloody big marquee though.

  • Random Play: He bangs the drum,

The Taiko drum trio that has played up at Gyoza King upon occasion, truly moving with noodles and Asahi! I seem to remember a rather fantastic drum solo at a Ronny Jordan gig at the town hall in the early ninties. And Herb, Herb the ginseng drummer, well, enough said! The beat does indeed go on...

  • Hard News: I'd just like to thank ...,

Fat Freddy's drop sounded twice as good (at least) as any of the other live acts. That was definitely the highlight. A band at the very top of their game. And Anika was entertaining. So was Lucy. People in TV land would not have seen her bouncing around on Xena dust between presentations.

  • Hard News: Save the King's Arms,

Yep, iconic and useful as the King's Arms is, especially as a live venue for some fairly unusual acts that wouldn't otherwise play in Auckland, they have tended of late to massively oversell their gigs. An alternative bar/toilet layout may help, and perhaps better use of the outside space i.e. a second bar at the back or side outside to spread the load. But hell, at least it exists as a great old venue in an accessible location. The council seems quite willing to hand out planning permission and sign off shonky ghetto style apartments (at least they WILL be very slum like in 10 years, with no proper maintenance) with no consideration given to the impact these cheap nasty developments have on their surrounding environs. Double standards in Auckland City as usual!

  • Hard News: Undie Wankers,

Regarding 100% pure, we should be VERY ashamed of the gap between perception and reality. Can we not control the belching diesel disgraces of our vehicular shame? Must we allow farmers to flush their effluvient into our waterways without recourse? Must we continue to allow an unregulated Power industry to burn coal as if this were Victorian England?
It is only the saving grace of a very small population that prevents us resembling China or the U.S. in it's unrepentent toxification of the environment. Oh, and STOP buying so much bottled fucking water!

  • Hard News: Going Underground,

Oh dear. Di-carpal tunnel syndrome. ANd molested under the harbour whilst strolling illegally on a motorway, not for me! Won't be there. And as for the new road network being around for hundreds of years, well, I would have thought future proofing said network by incorporating rail would have made sense. But that's another story.
