  • FletcherB,

Ah yes.... teaching the younglings how the universe works (huh- like I know?).

4 year old daughter.... "When I'm a mummy, who will be my daddy?" (ie. who will be the father of my child)
Me..."I dont know... you can choose who-ever you like."
daughter... "Will it be X,Y or Z?" (x,y, and z are boys at kindy)
Me..."It could be.... but you might not know them still when you are older, it might be someone you havent met yet. It will be someone you really love" (unstated-"I hope!")
Daughter "Can it be my brother?"....

    Ah... no...

    Congrats on your Civil Universary

  • Andrew Stevenson,

My conversations with my daughters run along mush the same line as Fletcher's
Except the eldest is sure that after you are a mummy you then get to become a daddy...

  • FletcherB,

    "mush"

Is there a word for when you make a typo and it turns out better or more appropriate than what you actually intended?

    Brilliance!

  • Jackie Clark,

Congratulations, Emma, on your Civil Universe. It was my wedding anniversary the other day - 16 years. I hadn't wanted to get married, really. My mother always advised against it, and everyone in my family just lived together, so it was considered rather quaint at the time. We didn't have any fluff or frills, just a nice party on a sunny day, so I am glad for that. I am gladder, however, that all these years later I love him far more than when I married him. And that's the point, I guess. Whether it's marriage, civil union, or a de facto relationship - it's nice to love the one you're with.

Nice. What comes through here is your enduring respect for and admiration of your partner. It is a very good basis for enduring love.

Should your daughter ask when you started "going out", you may find it helpful to tell her that yours was more of a "staying in" relationship. She can infer the rest according to her age and abilities.

I just spent nearly a week off with friends, drinking, playing games, and then swanning round Auckland with the Blog and Famous. He took three afternoons off work to mind the kids, washed the windows, hung up my garden thermometer, fixed the leaking toilet and set up a wireless network. I'm considering declaring him a god and setting up a religion, because the only way he could be any cooler is if he was tax-deductable.

It's lovely to encounter a state of the union address that's actually completely sincere.

My husband likes to tell people: "I met my wife when she was 7". Without, of course, explaining that he was 8 at the time...

Oh, that's who Michael Praed is, it's been bugging me, but I thought Wikipedia would be cheating.

So, does that mean you still own a Clannad album?

  • Kyle Matthews,

My sister had a big crush on Michael Praed when she was about 16 and that was on TV.

She'll be pissed when she finds out that you nabbed him.

  • Paul Campbell,

we got married for a visa .... 24 years ago .... we tried to do it in secret but we had to have 2 witnesses and one of them couldn't keep their mouth shut .... it was Dunedin, 1.5 degrees of separation - pretty soon people we're coming up to us in the street "I hear you're getting married" .... we had to race the gossip to my parents ... "um we're getting married in 3 days we'd sure like you to come" .... luckily my sister had done the getting married thing first earlier that year so it was sort of out of everyones system .... I tried to get the traditional marriage holiday from my boss at the Uni he wouldn't give it because we got married 'in secret', even though by then everyone in town knew

In the end we had a party at our cottage in Waitati, all the neighbours brought food and drnk, then they washed up, cleaned the house and left

I owned their Robin of Sherwood album right up until we moved. I bought it on vinyl because the record came with lots of pictures.

  • Isabel Hitchings,

    Oh sweet :) Happy universary!

I'm still dreading the day when my kids ask what that anniversary we celebrate in May is actually the anniversary of...

My seven-year-old has it all planned out. He's going to find a "lonely girl" to marry and in between having many, many babies they will run a computer shop together.

Universary - so THAT'S what the U stands for in AUT University... :>

Congrats - and has it really been three years since CU's were "allowed"? Time flies when people-choosing-or-not-being-allowed-to-marry are having fun...

In that case it ought to be called Auckland Tertiary University of Tautology, surely.

I thought so too but immediately on reading who he was, remembered the very beautiful Maid Marion... who I googled... Judi Trott (it was either Ms Trott or Maggie Barry that was my first red-head obsession).
