  • Che Tibby,

I believe that Tom may be what we used to call a 'dandy'! Capital.

i've often thought that tom was born a century out of synch.

I am merely what we used to, in more enlightened times, call a 'gentleman'. It is only in these troubled times, when we are overrun by besneakered oafs, that a chap with a modicum of dress sense comes to be called a 'dandy'.

On the other hand, you could do worse than join the Confederation of Anarcho-Dandyists (or CAD for short).

    Feet, people, feet.

And tattoos. But only if they are on the feet.

I have to admit I have a sort of gruding admiration for anyone who can use the phrase

one doesn't want to look like a corporate drone when going to a gallery opening dressed in Zambesi

    with a straight face.

    You're making a big assumption.

But while a pair of Loake brogues will look the business (in many senses) when paired with a pinstriped Zegna suit, they would be somewhat out of place when worn with an open-necked black muslin shirt untucked beneath a three-piece acid-washed denim suit.

Assuming that anyone other than a Zambesi mannequin would actually wear such an ensemble, of course.

Do the old ruls on no Brown shoes once the sun goes down still apply?

  • Robyn Gallagher,

Once I tried wearing a nice pair of high-heeled lady shoes. My big toe ended up turning bruised and black and the nail fell off.

    This seemed rather unladylike.

But I do have troublesome feet (high arch, short, wide). I'm lucky if I can find a pair that fit and look good.

  • Rob Hosking,

I like nothing better than feeling the grass under my feet & the sand between my toes. Supermarket vinyl is lovely & cool on barefeet in summer, after walking there on th ehot pavement.

Beach 4 Square Shops. The refridgerator on permanent hum. Feet flopping in across the worn lino floor, the odd grain of migrated beach sand under foot. Ice cream cone, already melting. Catching the edge of the doorstep as you go out and ripping the big toenail half off.

    Ahh, Kiwi summers...

I occasionally hang round on a Kiwi wedding forum (because sometimes the only other people who will tolerate your whining/glee are other brides) and the shoes the other forum-ites go ga-ga over totally bemuse me, because they're almost all stilettos. High ones. Surely your wedding is the one day you *don't* want to be wobbling around in torture devices?

  • Kerry Weston,

i was brought up never to wear high heels, as at 5'10 they might make me taller than blokes - and that was just not on!

I like shoes, hate wearing them - and discovered one can get too many beestings and develop allergy symptoms - racing heart, sweats, nausea etc. Just too much bee venom in the system apparently, but it does wear off or whatever eventually.

And that takes us to four! Four glorious PA writers* with tattoos. That I know of...

You counting me? If so, who's the fourth?

By the way collarbones and the elbow (outside and inside) super-frickin-painful! But my tattooist reliably says feet are the most painful (oh and she's a she).

But speaking of pain and shoes my partner went out one night in her new high heels. She danced and danced and came home with shoes full of blood and crushed nerves. And she would totally do it again.

By the way she did a post about how high your heels should be based on your height

Yes, and I dunno if I'm allowed to say.

One of my problems with judging heel height (for boots, of course) is that I think I'm about three inches shorter than I am. So I end up towering a bit.

That post is pretty great, btw.

If you love her, don't encourage it! I had a pair of black patent leather stilettos, when I was in my early 20's. I thought I was the bee's knees and dropdead sexually alluring in them. Only problem was, I could never wear them anywhere. I had to take them off and put them back on and then take them off, and so on. My feet hurt in them, I couldn't walk in them, but dammit, I was sexy when I wore them. Yeah, right.

  • Rob Hosking,

By the way she did a post about how high your heels should be based on your height

I used to know a woman the same height as me - just over six foot - but who insisted on wearing huge high heels (and large buckles on those shoes).

She resembled a power pylon with sex appeal, if such a thing can be imagined. Used sway in a heavy gale.

She's probably some orthopedic specialist's pension plan by now.

my partner went out one night in her new high heels. She danced and danced and came home with shoes full of blood and crushed nerves. And she would totally do it again.

I think there's a Hans Christian Anderson story about that sort of thing...

My ex-stepdaughter is 6'2", and while most of the time she wears sensible flats, on special occasions she'll wear 4" heels. The results are spectacular to say the least.

  • Islander,

I *love* my feet. They are beautiful (this isnt just my opinion- I've had feedback on the beach, at home - "oo, look at your feet!" "Whassa matter?" "Your toes are all straight! Amd you dont have callouses! And you look after your toenails!")

    - they're like my hands - big, lovely, capable. Even as they start to deform (ho hum, arthritis with an added smidgin of gout.)

I have always *hated* any restriction on foot or toe movement. Ran round bare foot for most of my childhood -

-Carolyn Skelton: when my mother was a young widow, 31 with 6 kids, she was mortified to be approached by the headmaster of our primary school offering assistance to provide footwear...she'd provided perfectly good sandals, with excellent socks in winter: we kids stuffed them in the milkbox as we headed off to school, putting them on again when we returned home...

and quite a lot of my adulthood BUT

as things like arthritis etc increase, I buy my Tevas a size larger; my boots (and I've always loved good boots - I once spent two months' wages as a tobacco picker on a superb pair of calf-high tramping boots) become lighter (SWATs now) and even more adjustable, with extremely good socks.

I've never worn high heels (but I admire the elan and poise of family & friends who do so)*
and my only fashion evening boots and slip-ons are Eccos, Timberlands, Merrills and Skechers (worn with pure silk or merino socks - comfortable, protective, warm or cool as you like - and not noticeable as a fashion thing...)

*Their feet dont look - quite so elegant...

Those of us who ride motorcycles *have* to wear boots....the consequences of sliding on asphalt are not pretty....

And. of course, a heavy padded jacket, with armour, pants ditto, a helmet, and armoured gloves. Getting kitted up to ride is akin to a knight preparing for battle.

She can do what she likes, and really i'd be hard pressed to stop her dancing.

couldn't walk in them, but dammit, I was sexy when I wore them. Yeah, right.

You know what, you would've been. They* did a study a few years ago and found that men prefer the shape of women's legs when they are wearing high heels (the test subjects couldn't see the feet just the legs).

*The same "they" who do all those kinds of studies.

I'v got a tattoo on the the sole of one foot. getting it on there didn't feel to good, so I'm not doing it again.

    Yee-ouch!!!

I've tried fire walking. Anyone else done that?

We were supposed to at the end of our physics course at uni, but we weren't allowed to because it was deemed "unsafe"
