  • Tom Semmens,

    I don't know why women dress in such uncomfortable gear

    Because they can. It is their monument to their time, in the most obvious way.

    All to soon, the words of Shelley have relevance when they look in the mirror:

    "My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
    Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"

  • Megan Wegan,

    I reckon there's a useful public service ad in that.

    My life as a public service ad? Have at it.

    But yeah, I believe I said somewhere on the internet when the ad first came out, that maybe the story could have been told from the point of view of, if not a man who date raped his girlfriend, then maybe the guilt of the friends who left her alone in town, drunk and vulnerable.

    But I still don't think that works particularly well, and a "don't rape/assault people" ad would be better.

  • Stewart,

    I'm with Kyle in that many young men aren't being given the right messages as they grow from infants up to men. They don't get (enough of) the right examples, suitable mentoring, etc. The strong women in my family and the dearth of domestic violence helped me to avoid most of the problem behaviours that relate to women - not so much the problems relating to alcohol which have taken years and a dedicated wife to temper.

    (Still a work in progress.)

  • andrew gunn,

    Is it at all possible that a public service ad aimed at the male perpetrators, or maybe their peers who could have some influence over them, could get any traction?

    Pragmatically, we'll be talking with our daughters in years to come about looking after themselves in the big wide world, but I would like to see something that tells men it's time to step up and stop being a dick, and that goes for your mates as well.

    Of course not. The cosmetics industry would collapse, and the recession's bad enough already, don't you think?

  • FletcherB,

    Does that article sound suspiciously like the police officers were the ones doing the beating? Or am I just a cynical person?

    I guess thats one reading of it... my (only marginally) less cynical reading of it is that the police sat in their car watching the beating (possibly by the bouncer?) and were immediately on scene as soon as the kicking was over?

    Same. I'm imagining something more like the Not OK ads, that taps into male honour and loyalty.

    Here's where alcohol might take a person who would never do this when sober, but under the influence of alcohol they do something horrible to another person.

    I have to say I remain deeply ashamed of stuff I did while blotto many years ago. Sobering. Not sure how advertising would have addressed the situation, other than perhaps reminding mates to look out for one another.

  • Sacha,

    I think ALAC are hopelessly conflicted because they're not allowed to just say that alcohol is a drug that causes harm, full stop. No, that would upset the booze industry.

  • giovanni tiso,

    Older women aren't allowed to like what they see in the mirror?

    Course not. Young is beautiful and beautiful is moral. As exemplified by a killer line from this recent article on the kerfuffle surroundoing a painting exhibited at an art gallery in Nelson:

    "[The artist] deliberately pictured beautiful bodies so it wouldn't be offensive"

  • Tim Hannah,

    "[The artist] deliberately pictured beautiful bodies so it wouldn't be offensive"

    The generous reading of that line is that the artist painted bodies (which happened to be beautiful) in such a way (not naked) that it wouldn't be offensive.

    Or maybe it does mean that the artist thinks beautiful bodies aren't offensive whereas others are.

    New Aussie ad warning young women off another dangerous practice -- texting while driving:

    4 mins long and extremely graphic.

    It does seem a bit generous. (And they are naked. Although not full frontally. But really I think if the quote is accurate it's hard to interpret it any other way than they're beautiful so their nakedness is not offensive.)

  • Craig Ranapia,

    I don't know why women dress in such uncomfortable gear

    Hey, every so often, I like sucking in the tum-tum, getting tricked out in a ridiculously uncomfortable (and expensive to hire) penguin suit with the dress shoes that should be classed as torture implements, just because I can. And if I squint really hard while walking past a mirror, I kinda sorta look like Daniel Craig for one brief shining moment. :)

    Don't know if the laydeze have an equivalent, but I don't think any of the above suggests that I don't like my tubby, grey-haired close enough to middle-aged as makes no odds bad self. Because I do.

    The ad is four minutes long and they think it's going to work on the attention span of the kind of person who will text while driving? Okay.

    Oh, you asked for it Lucy. :)

    I strove with none, for none was worth my strife;
    Nature I loved, and next to Nature, Art;
    I warmed both hands before the fire of Life;
    It sinks, and I am ready to depart.

    Meta: I must say that this thread is rather warming the cockles of my heart. Not one person has yet said that by discussing fixing the harassment problem we are criminalising all men, overreacting, humourless, or anything even approximating the things on the usual bingo card. You are all quite delightful and I am beginning to wonder if this is actually the internet.

    Though fairness forces me to share Dorothy Parker's typically astringent opinion of the author of the above:

    Upon the work of Walter Landor
    I am unfit to write with candor.
    If you can read it, well and good;
    But as for me, I never could.

    I was just thinking the same thing. Add to that the poetry, and the fact that I'm over on Field Theory talking about basketball, I may never need to visit any other part of the web.

    First time I haven't been called a hairy legged harridan for ages. ;)
