  • LegBreak,

Not sure about the Carter comment.

Following is lame exit from a certain game in Cardiff last year I seem to recall the odd talk-back caller going on about how he spent too much time in front of the mirror as a cause.

Cowan’s just behaving like most 25 year-old Southland men. He is not a role model, and neither should he be.

  • Gary Hutchings,

when Carter steps onto the field no one (except maybe the opposition) are making comments about his prettiness,

You have obviously not been in the company of a bunch of women at the rugby on a Friday night after work then :),

  • FletcherB,

    This is actually very simple....

As my three year old can explain.... something that's closer looks bigger.

Therefor, from a New Zealand perspective, the All-Black looks to be a bigger dick just for being close by....

Gimelstob, hands-down. Cowan's idiocy is pretty much self-directed; Gimelstob was repulsively misogynistic, and all the worse because he expected to get away with it.

I don't buy the role model thing either, but I think there's a difference between that and behaving in a manner that reflects poorly on your employer and, potentially, your colleagues.

This was, after all, the third time this kind of thing has happened, and he was on remand for the second incident.

I think we can agree that sports talk-back is all dicks, all the time.

You have obviously not been in the company of a bunch of women at the rugby on a Friday night after work then :)

I think i was trying to get at the fact that he will either be judged as a sportsman or a pretty boy, but never at the same time. And never beyond a fawning devotion. Whereas with the female tennis players the two seemed intertwined.

I wasn't sure if I was allowed to mention the third incident due to legal, um, things? (where's Graeme Edgeler when you need him?)

I don't buy the role model thing either

Except you take Cowan out to a school and the kids will clamour for his autograph*, then later on see him on the news and put two and two together.

And down south they must love him.

*though they may think he's Andy Ellis

    RB,
I agree Cowan’s recidivism is relevant, but I also wonder if that means he’s a marked man. I guess it’s hard to take a firm stand on it when, once again, we don’t know all the details.

But I certainly found the “He’s a role model to kids” (at 4a.m.; really?) speech from the arresting officer in Invercargill pretty hard to stomach.

Send a rock star to a school and they’ll be swamped for autographs too.

And they’re allowed to get drunk & disorderly. In fact it’s been positively encouraged in the past.

Au contraire, I have been convinced for years that DC's poor performances over in South Africa are the result of the air being thinner and thus his hair not retaining enough volume.

  • Tim Michie,

Gimelstob - were it not for the fact that he presumably has innocent relatives with the same name, it's almost worth making a noun of that name...

Cowan's behaviour, wrong headed and out of order as it was, showed himself a bad 4 in the morning drunk and represented himself fairly accurately it appears. The Union were reasponsible for the rest of the regrettable outcome. Things like this can be the making of an All Black, found and filmed drunk sitting on the side of a Chistchurch footpath, Tana Umanga picked himself up and became the very standard of focus of what was important to him in the game and his life.

Gimelstob was supposed to be representing players. In the 21st Century. With at least a scad of professionalism. And, one would hope, a sense of slf perservation that would keep him polite or at least civil when discussing potential clients.

Mind you, from his attitude, it may be he doesn't mind being known by the title under consideratoin. I mean, when you're called Gimelstob...

Gimelstob by a country mile ...

    Gimelstob's misogyny is inexcusable.
Cowan appears to have an alcohol problem.

Cowan may be able to sort his life out, but I doubt that Gimelstob will ever stop being a complete dick ...

Yup, that pretty much sums it up for me.

Perhaps we can have a repeat of the Battle of the Sexes: Serena for Billie Jean King and Gimelstob for Riggs.

  • Robyn Gallagher,

    Dick = Cowan

Gimelstob is a pantomime character. "Look at me!!! I'm being sexist!!! I don't like women!!! Look at me!!" He's just doing it to get attention. Ignore him and he'll stop.

But Cowan didn't get up to his bullshit antics for attention. He needs to learn to drink and to control his violence. Regardless of how good or how needed he is at rugby, he's still part of our society and needs to stop being a dick.

Cowan. My gut response was Gimelstob, because he was just so bloody offensive. But Robyn's right, he's TOO offensive to take seriously. And nobody's making excuses for him.

But who's more likely to actually hurt somebody with their dickishness? Cowan.

The person Cowan is most likely to hurt is himself. As in Jesse Ryder.

  • Hadyn Green,

I suppose I should vote: Gimelstob.

However, Cowan + the All Black management as a package would win. For example why was Cowan allowed to attend the Prime Minister's reception last night? Shouldn't he be made to sit in the hotel alone (with the minibar locked shut).

  • LegBreak,

Ooh good; I was hoping we could get round to somehow making Henry the Dick of the Week.

Where the All Black management have strayed into dangerous territory is that you can’t help but get the feeling he’d have been dealt with more harshly if there Leonard was fit. Especially in these times of growing moral temperance that seems to pervade at the moment.

And that’s a dodgy precedent to set. Such a decision should come from the Union, not the coach.

BTW, so Cowan had to site through a Beehive reception stone-cold sober? That’s the biggest punishment of them all.

The other dude - i forget his name, the one that's not Cowan. Cowan's a silly southland boy who can play rugger, but has at least been clever enough to manipulate the 'light' halfback situation to his and the team's benefit. The other one's just a drop kick so wins my vote.

I've seen at least one quote along the lines of "oh, Justin's a great friend of mine, and he really respects women, so of course we all know he was just joking".

  • Angus Robertson,

Beyond the clear fact that this is the kind of guy who gets turned down in a bar and then calls the girl a slut for doing it; this sexualisation of sportswomen has to stop.

Making it "stop" is real easy, all you have to do is buy out Maria Sharapova's contracts with Tiffany, Sony-Ericsson, TAG-Heuer, Parlux, Land-rover, Colgate that like to portray her as appealingly good looking. Of course if you are unwilling to provide M. Sharapova with a fair income of $100 million pa., then you have nothing to blame but your own basic cheapness for her continued "sexualisation".

I thought that his punishment was decided by Shand - the manager, and a NZRU person. Henry wasn't in the room? Of course, it's entirely possible that he influenced it from outside the room.

I've seen at least one quote along the lines of "oh, Justin's a great friend of mine, and he really respects women, so of course we all know he was just joking".

Sadly from a couple of the women that he talked about, though from memory the ones that he talked up, not down.

Shame they didn't all respond by saying "I would have slept with Gimelstob, but I understand his penis and his brain are both very small".

Yes, it's advertising that leads to men being gimps about sportswomen. It's never anything to do with the men themselves. "Led astray by Colgate I was, couldn't help myself, your honour."

It was Shand’s final call, but we’d be dreaming to think that he wasn’t made aware of the thinness of options. Especially with the obvious next cab off the rank had a public falling out with Henry last year.

I actually support that action taken; I’m just not sure it was for the right reasons.

    It was Nicole Vaidisova

And she's a lot more forgiving than me.

Even if he's joking, or is just an idiot who doesn't deserve our attention, I still don't think it's ok to say "I wish my brother could nail [Kournikova] and reap the benefits" or "I'm going to hit the ball at her midriff until she cries".

Jimmy Cowan is, by the sound of it, a young man with a problem, who has been punished.

Gimelstob has apologised, and yet continues in his role as both a commentator and ATP player representative.
