  • Mark Thomas,

    meh. it's just pop music and fashion.

    i have often wondered what the iconic retro thing would be for the 00's though.

    70s=punk/disco
    80s=mod/power dressing/glam rockers
    90s=grunge and techno
    00s= ??

  • John Farrell,

    You missed the only real "scene", man. The 60s - hippies, pot, lsd. The rest, all commercial constructs.

  • merc,

    Arthur Rimbaud, the first punk, hippy, rockstar, lover shooter, arms dealer, drop out, drug user, what-have-you.
    And damn fine poet IMHO. Plus a little further research on the EMO sub-culture at schools in Auckland may have produced some interesting results, I have many tales.

  • Joanna,

    Damn you for putting Fall Out Boy in my head. Now in retaliation, I really would like to know who let the dogs out? And maaaaaaan, I really do feel like a woman, so if you don't tell my heart, my achey breaky heart, why does love do this to me, or show us your crack, I'll ummm fail to think of any more irritating earworm songs to quote here, but I certainly hope you've learnt your lesson.

  • Grant McDougall,

    Shooting fish in a barrel I know, but emo and grunge are both crap.

    Emo is just commercial punk dressed-up in goth clothes, while grunge was sheep-in-wolves clothing music - "alternative" music for people that would crap themselves if they ever heard anything truly adventurous.

    ooh, grant. that's harsh

    by comparison to the preening self obsessed glam rockers of the 80s/early90s, nirvana etc oozed credibility.

    or are you talking about the people who rushed out to buy plaid flannel shirts?

  • Nobody Important,

    Close, but not quite. I definitely chuckled when I first saw Emo's because it was like stepping back into the 80's -- been there, worn that. Emo's look pretty harmelss to me, and how else is a closeted 15 year old boy meant to come to terms with his sexuality??

    All I know is that in 2027, when people start throwing costume parties themed after this decade, three quarters of the guests will turn up as emos.

    I chuckled again last summer watching a bunch of 20somethings crossing Ponsy Rd on their way to (presumably!) an 80's theme party. It was such a mish mash of styles I was tempted to stop and shout "No No No No - we didn't actually dress like that!"

    I think what people get wrong is thinking that music videos from the 70s and 80s are time capsules of what we wore. Okay, some people did dress like they were in Def Leppard but we certainly didn't dress like Boy George.

    What was 'wrong' with these 20somethings mentioned above was that they were mixing up the different styles on the same person ie dressed like Cyndi Lauper crossed with Flashdance crossed with Thriller. Eek!

  • Josh Addison,

    Emos are just soft goths. Which, considering goths are just soft punks, makes them pretty soft indeed. Soft squared.

    What's funny is listening to the goths rattle off "emo jokes" that up until a few years ago were "goth jokes" -- "I've got a goth/emo lawn -- it cuts itself" and so on...

  • Stuff n Things,

    Meh, emos aren't that bad.

    When you look at the 'emo' music, it all just seems to be a response to the silly, slutty pop crap music that littered the early noughties. Frankly, any fashion that leads to longer tshirts as a response to muffin-causing hipster styles is a good thing.

    Seriously - better My Chemical Romance than Paris Hilton's second album.

    Damn teenagers, with you're music and everything...

  • Simon Grigg,

    Okay, some people did dress like they were in Def Leppard but we certainly didn't dress like Boy George.

    You obviously didn't go to A Certain Bar....I think I saw Adam and his Ants, Boy George and various Stray Cats there most nights.

  • Nobody Important,

    A Certain Bar, Quays, and Zanzibar ... yesindeedee!

    And you're right, but I didn't want to make my post too long by adding qualifiers. We may have 'dressed up' when we went out but it was usually a mad dash from the car to the club, cos we knew we looked ridiculous. Until we got inside of course, and then it got serious, and everyone checked eachother out to see who looked 'fabulous'. That's why I think Emo is harmless, at least the kids are dressing up again to go out.

    But as you will recall, the scene then wasn't that big. To expand on a point in Graeme Reid's blog: I recall being greatly disapointed on entering the Wag in London circa 87. Hyped up with the anticipation of years of reading about it in The Face I was surprised to find out it was tiny and no bigger or cooler than one of your clubs Mr Grigg! (That's a compliment to you, lest you be unsure).

    Awaits comment from Mr Grigg: "Tiny? So they didn't let you into the other room - the big one - where the cool people were?"

  • Heather Gaye,

    I think what people get wrong is thinking that music videos from the 70s and 80s are time capsules of what we wore.

    Actually, I think what's got wrong is the idea that retro parties and the like are supposed to incorporate the whole of the era they're pastiching. They're not a tribute to everyday life - they're a tribute to that box of vinyl & what-was-I-thinking fancy dress you (or your dad) stashed in the attic, regardless of the t-shirt/jeans that you (or your dad) wore while listening to earth wind & fire / wham / soundgarden / johnny cash.

    In that respect, I think emo will be an equally valid cultural memoir. Back at university, whenever I threw a '60s party, everyone'd come dressed as beatniks. Granted, at those emo parties in 2027, the poetry reading won't be quite so popular.

    Is it such a surprise that our perception of eras gone is dominated by the more polarising creative media that remains?

  • Rebecca Williams,

    judging by the rapid recycling of decade defining looks over the last few years, won't the naughties retro parties start happening in 2010 or '11?????
