  • Yamis,

To look at the specifics we have played Scotland in 87, Canada in 91, Scotland in 95, Scotland in 99 and a rubbish South African team in 03.

While I think we will excrete (in the nicest possible term over France) and do the same over an injury hit Aussie team I also think we could possibly lose a one off game v South Africa in the final.

Please, oh please do not begin organising a victory parade up Queen Street in advance of the final for gods sakes!

  • linger,

I concur, the "playing the blues" one leaps out as the best so far in case of a loss (and also works for an AB win), though I would suggest some minor tweaking to identify the drinker as the spectator rather than the player, e.g.:

Just what you need when they're playing the Blues:
    Whisky Galore.

(Should this version actually win, I stress that credit remains with Jeremy.)

  • linger,

    ...or even

    When they're playing the Blues
    Try some quality booze

You could even sample a commentator for 'try'...

(Same stipulation as above, it's still a riff on Jeremy's idea.)

Not really related the the guidelines set but better than the insipid efforts I made earlier
(though somehow I think I've ripped someone off)

    Always possible, Felix.

Looks like we won't be getting the Blues. More like the whites.

    Rob,
The obligatory happiness insurance bet I'm afraid. $20 bucks on the Frogs.

  • Felix Marwick,

Right about now (10 minutes to play) I'm kind of glad I made that bet

Given the Wallabies loss this morning, and now ours, I wonder how all those writers who were belittling the state of northern hemisphere rugby are feeling right now?

Speaking from the standpoint of someone who doesn't like rugby, but nonetheless celebrates when the All Blacks win, I'm really sorry, you guys that they lost. It's a real shame - and I'm not being facaetious. A real bloody shame.

I blame William Webb Ellis. If only he hadn't picked the ball up that day and ran with it we'd be spared all this grief.

  • Yamis,

The most fascinating thing to watch from all this will be the reaction of the coaching staff (to the inevitable interrogation - they will crack at some point), and then the subsequent reaction of the NZRU and how much they will let the next coaching group call the shots and tell them who is going to play and when and where.

Though maybe I should just get back to the here and now and save all that for later and just blame the ref.

Oh hell, I'd not thought about the sneering reaction these results will provoke.

Just quietly someone has taken over rugbyworldcup.com with an advertising site. If the All Blacks are gone no reason to hold onto the website, right.

  • Robyn Gallagher,

I just read the sad news on the Herald's website and this was the first place I came to check the reaction.

I'm so ignorant of the ways of the RWC that I somehow thought the NZ vs France game was tonight, not last night, but I know it was a big one and I know it sucks that NZ lost.

So, kind of like what Jackie said above, I may not be a rugby follower, but y'all have my commiseration.

It's been cool seeing cars driving around with black silver fern flags (and the occasional Fijian flag).
