  • Hadyn Green,

Anyway there is no stopping unions scheduling an extra Bledisloe etc outside the 4N.

I think that would be a good addition to the plan we outlined.

The “product” (Pay TV) must have something EVERY year. That way they keep the NRL honest.

And that's what the tour idea offers. A big tour every year that most people will have o get through Pay TV until it's in their home country.

Personally, I believe that SANZAR need to show the fans that they are doing something for the fans and not just for the money. As such I believe any future media contract should stipulate that instead of blanket rights you could have stations bid for separate games (or more likely blocks of games) with no one station allowed to hold all the rights. this will give us (shock horror) consumer choice.

  • Hadyn Green,

To me the question is - could a 18 team, two pool Air New Zealand Cup, with the All Blacks playing and up to four Australian teams & a Pacific Islands Barbarians, a top five play off...

Well I'll stop ya there, you're on the right track though. But you can't have an odd number in the playoffs without a weird bye week thing. The NFL do it (the bye week, with 6 in the postseason) and it has incredibly variable results.

I laid out my "dream" for the Super 16 here and I still think it's valid. Also this is how to run a salary cap IMHO.

I would have posted the gist here but it's a bit long.

  • Hadyn Green,

Actually having re-read my Super 16 post I'd tweak it a little. But the idea remains the same.

I report done before the revamp of the NPC showed that spectators like to see a good game but numbers are more heavily influenced by specific "star" players. I mean just look how many tickets the LA Galaxy have sold on the back of David Beckham.

Hence to make a better competition with more viewers the player base needs to be spread amongst the different provinces. And players have to realise that just because they're going to Tasman* instead of Canterbury** that it isn't a bad thing because the fans will LOVE you and you still get to play rugby and the selectors aren't going to forget about you.

Even players in the suckiest teams still get voted to the Probowl in the states.

    **seriously, random

...we'd like to suggest to those insanely angry New Zealanders out there that they man up to this loss a little more...

You know, apart from a few rather pathetic letters to the editor, I haven't come across any major emotional headcases out there and I'm currently travelling in the deep South - a region you'd think would be amongst the most vociferous.

It seems to be the MSM who keep bleating on about it all and the meltdowns happening around us...er, where exactly?

I could have added that they prevented us from picking our Maori players to tour until the 1960s and that's why they kept winning. (and that the NZRU acceded to their demands)

Not to mention - cough - the reffing.

First tour I ever really followed was the '76 one to SA and there were three or four crucial decisons which were blatantly biased. T

The series should have been drawn, at least....

This has really been a lesson for me about how far away from the pulse the MSM's finger actually is. Because before that fantastic homecoming in Christchurch, I thought that they were representing the prevailing feelings of the country, and it turns out that they... weren't. At all.

Is now the time to mention the 50+ pages of post-loss messages of support in the Herald's Your Views, of all places? The messages are all very measured and some are rather lovely. Practically endless 'never mind, we're still proud of you, it's only a game'. There's even one from a French person, all in French, which I believe says something quite poetic about the French rugby team being a star in the rugby sky, but the All Blacks being the sun. (Yeah, I know, but it sounds a lot less cheesy in French.) So. We don't suck nearly as much as I thought we did. I'm pretty pleased with us, actually.

Tune into radio sport talkback for all your crazed sports fan needs. It really is the gateway into another world. A demented, illogical world where Troy Flavell would have single-handedly won the cup, and Richie McCaw is an over-rated showpony.

  • Don Christie,

One of the plans for expanding the Super 12 seems to have been the principle "more of a good thing is bloody excellent". We aren't convinced this was sound thinking.

Damn straight. Is anyone else sick of the self serving media types that claimed the crowds and audience figures for this year's S14 were down because Henry decided to cotton wool a few All Blacks. What crap. They were down because, as many many people pointed out beforehand, the tournament was drawn out, for the most part meaningless and lacked focus.

All they needed to do was split it into 2 pools of 7, have fewer games and a playoff series. But no, the money grabbers wanted to fleece us fans for more and more. And there was still no room for PI teams.

Now of course, the S14 failure and the ABs RWC failure are being linked in a way that suggests Murdoch and all the media organisations that feed off the circus learned nothing.

2011 RWC have a cruise ship parked in a port (floating htl) and have Fiji/Samoa/Tonga play home games in a home pool. Big hits or what - total TV highlights and what a draw card for the Rugby world to have a month in the Islands.

I agree 3410. Seven's is the quick, fast, funner version of rugby.

Or if I may geek it up a little: Sevens is to Rugby what Mario Kart is to Gran Turismo.

  • Yamis,

Unfortunately these days the game is sold out to the dollar so regardless of how sick people get of what we get, they will keep delivering it to us.

It's like fast food. The more you get out there (and fast while you're at it) the more you make.

Compare that to a fine dining experience that people may enjoy because its better quality and more of a novelty.

That restaurant will sell nowhere near as many meals.

My theory is though, that if they want to deliver volume then they need to deliver variety in that volume. So add Argentina to the Tri nations, and also add Samoa, Tonga and Fiji as well but maybe splut them into two pools (which get juggled each year) and the corres[ponding teams from each pool play off to find the winners and the bragging rights outside that. You could play home and away and that would give 7 matches spread over about two full months.

Unfortunately it will never happen though because all the Argentinians and Islanders play in the NH and won't get released.

Yes, and if you add flour to water it's not flour anymore is it?

But it was before it was added.
