Shall I go on? No, I thought not. They call it perspective, chappies! What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and all that bollocks.

Oh, it wasn’t like the tube actually hurt much. The kidney stone emergency that preceded it, on the other hand … fark.

I like the way they don’t fuck about and just give you more morphine for as long as you can keep asking for it though.

Yes yes, I'm sure he was inconvenienced by all that but, you know, child birth. Haven't you heard nothing can ever possibly compare?

  • Morgan Nichol,

Paul, it might seem bloody obvious (because it should be) but thank you for saying scrotum. SO MANY people say testicles when they're talking about their beloved sack.

Oddly enough, I've had a fellow (female) gout sufferer insist to me that the top end of that sucker was worse than childbirth. Not that I'm going anywhere near that argument ...

yup. a bit of a tickle.

not childbirth, but you don't get to take home a bundle of joy. only that look on the face of the ex-girlfriend who sees you walking out of the clinic.

Until you reach the point, as I did once last year, where they say "We have to be a bit more careful with the painkillers from now on, as people sometimes stop breathing with this much".

I also had both a vasectomy and a colonoscopy last year; I never thought I'd say this, but having bits chopped out of my... bits... was vastly preferable to a camera up the arse.

I really don't want either, but I guess if pushed I'd go for the camera. (How big was the thing? Are we talking goatse, or are we talking 'baby the blow job's great but please stop doing that'?)

i think they call it “the stallion” if it’s any indication.

i saw a doco on it on the telly (back when i watched one), and immediately thought, "i need to introduce more fibre to my diet, TODAY."

Yup heard the same. The key thing is that was one person comparing pain of two things that happened to them.

As for comparing between people, please can we just say whatever it is simply caused pain. Pissing contests over whose pain is the greater seem so pointless.

    Quite right.

But I bet my kidney stone was bigger than Gio's.

  • Hilary Stace,

It wasn't the pain so much as the big deal it seems to be for some to go to a doctor about intimate parts of your body. That's what doctors are there for. And nurses if you are talking about smear tests etc. But it seems to me that men are a bit phobic about even a simple prostate check. Women have to endure mammograms which are much worse. Vasectomies are, after all, a very simple and straightforward procedure for healthy men, and prevent women from having to endure much worse.

Of two childbirths - one long with a posterior baby and one fast, furious and unmedicated - attempting to place the catheter before the epidural was far-and-away the most painful part.

I'm not sure that comparison holds unless you are referring to tubal ligation. And yes, that's a more major surgery than a vasectomy.

Without meaning to get too serious this is exactly the same as racist or sexist jokes. Offensive is in the eye of the beholder, end of story.

Same here for medical issues. If a guy is phobic about bending over and having his GP stick a finger up his butt then that's real for that guy. Arguing that women have it worse does not make it any less traumatic for that guy.

It's like me saying mammograms are trivial because nobody cuts you and my knee surgery was much worse ... it has no relevance. I'm pretty sure I could find women who think mammograms are no big deal but that doesn't make it less of a deal for those who do find it a big deal. I'm certain I could find men who think mammograms aren't a big deal and that wouldn't have any relevance either.

My vasectomy was easy and a simple decision for me. No big deal for me (apart from the smell). It's good to hear about the experiences of others. And it's interesting that this is really not a topic often discussed. Yes many men have issues about it ... but my feeling is that minimizing their issues by making comparisons isn't going to help.

  • Hilary Stace,

I also wanted to say thanks to the men who do have the vasectomies. It must be traumatic on many levels, and I didn't mean to minimise that.

My friend (not mentioned on this thread) who is a vasectomy doctor is lovely, gentle and funny, and I recommend him. But I think they must all be like that.
