  • Megan Wegan,

Weird, that's not what it makes me feel like at all.

Yeah, me neither. That's odd, isn't it?

  • George Darroch,

No complaints on the Slovak goal then?

I haven't got any reason to. I actually thought NZ's was ever so slightly offside, but not enough for anyone to complain.

@Simon: yeah I think Brazil will be where we really have to knuckle down and try hard to win. Do that and the cup's as good as ours.

"A freak lightening storm has felled the Brazilian team as they take the field, handing the quarter final match to the All Whites who now progress to the Semi Finals to face England."

  • Deborah,

The Australian has come to the party too

All White on the night - Kiwis show Australia how it's done

JUST when you thought the World Cup couldn't get any more annoying, what about this? On day five of the tournament as things currently stand it's New Zealand 1 and Australia nil.

England in the semi-finals? That's just crazy talk...

I hear that's a guaranteed win. Who do we take on in the final?

I'm picking Germany. We can nail England on penalties. Germany will be a tall order, but anything can happen on the day...

I think not enough people took their shirts off for it to qualify.

  • vangam,

When are TVNZ going to dump Mark Sainsbury? The interview tonight with Schmeltz and Reid was the most tepid piece of sporting television I have seen in a long time (and there are plenty of contenders for that title given the state of rugby journalism on NZ television.) He couldnt ask a single intelligent question, other than the final one about how they celebrated. The rest of the interview was 'how does it feel?', 'how do you keep your cool?', 'do you know you are famous now?' If there was a single, probing, insightful question in there then I'm afraid I missed it. Those poor soccer players that have to sit there and take the guy seriously.

  • Kyle Matthews,

Plus the insistence with doing it live, hence 8 second pauses each way waiting for the feed to come through while everyone looks stupid.

They at least could have done it half an hour earlier and then edited it down. Would have fitted in 50% more talking.

Here's more gratutiousness in the form of a non-fan's guide to the men of the world cup, possibly safe for work (depending on how comfortable your employers are with shirtlessness).

We do play football although there are rather an unfortunate number of "gentlemen" in football who seem to think we oughtn't

  • vangam,

Is anyone else disgusted by TV One's highlights show? I think in an hour long show we are lucky to get 5 mins of highlights from each game - and of those 5mins probably only 2-3 mins is when the ball is actually 'live' and in play. Deplorable.

  • Mike Hollywood,

@ vangam - given the quality of some of the football thus far, some would argue that 5 mins highlights per match is positively generous. But yeah, point taken. Still, at least Mark Sainsbury isn't commentating!

It'll be all about licenses and how much game footage they are allowed to show. Of the 64 games, only 11 are live and free to air.

  • Sam F,

Was amused by the story on the front page of the Herald Sport section (or is that the back page of the Business section?), where the main thrust seemed to be how awesome the Herald had been in predicting that Reid would make a big contribution, when they profiled him in the last Friday SuperSport...

Methinks TVNZ hasn't actually purchased any highlights and is simply 'padded-out' the clips originally supplied as news footage. If they have actually paid money for those "highlight" pieces then they have been seriously ripped-off.

  • vangam,

Using a stop-clock I timed the highlights from this evening's games. I stopped the clock for replays and dead-ball moments (like post goal celebrations):

    Uruguay v S. Africa - 6.10 mins
    Honduras v Chile - 2.10 mins
    Spain v Switzerland - 7.15 mins

Barely fifteen minutes of football in an hour-long show.
