  • Dan Slevin,

Couldn't have got that prediction more wrong if I tried.

Well done Germany. Impressive all over the park.

  • Matt Swinson,

They were brilliant - favourites for my money now.

And how has Klose managed to play such a marginal role for Bayern this season but turn it on come world cup time? Top stuff.

  • Tom Semmens,

And how has Klose managed to play such a marginal role for Bayern this season but turn it on come world cup time?

Probably for exactly that reason. As a casual observer, it seems to me almost all the "stars" of world soccer are either injured, played out or disinterested. They play far to many club games and get paid far to much money by their clubs to be really keen on peaking for the world cup.

The best teams are the best TEAMS, and come with the freshest players with reputations to make.

He was all class after the loss. On the field to console his players - unlike messrs. Lippi, Dunga, Domenech - and then with his comments at the press conference. Great game Germany but my heart was with Argentina throughout.

  • Peter Darlington,

Nope, I think your narrative is perfect. Maradona had to get smashed in this Cup so he can come back from the depths of despair and redeem himself and Messi in 2014. Looking forward to it already.

  • Peter Darlington,

Oh, and this German team are a phenomenon. How do you coach a bunch of 21 & 24 year olds to come flying out of the box at an experienced and talent filled Argentinean side like that? Incredible stuff.

    Without Ballack, to boot.

  • simon g,

Germany were great fun, but then they were generously helped by another comedy routine from the opposition defence. It's nice to see minnows like Argentina and England having their moment in the sun, but it's only when Germany come up against a tough, well-drilled professional defence like New Zealand's that we'll see a true test of their attacking prowess.

  • Peter Darlington,

Spain's defence will be a tougher proposition but I'm not sure it will cope. Amazingly it will be Germany taking the weight of expectstion into the matchrather than the Spanish and I wonder if this will just help Spain a little bit. Germany not having the brilliant young Muller may be a factor as well.

  • giovanni tiso,

I think the Spanish defence and Puyol in particular could be horribly exposed. But it depends on how fast the German players are allowed to run at them. Today Argentina's problem (other than in the first goal) wasn't the defence, it was the midfield.

  • Rob Stowell,

Yeah. But oooh. Aren't they fast!
I loved the midfield play: beautifully timed passes, razor sharp, sudden runs. (But turned on the TV at 2:02 so missed the first goal, boo, then fell asleep at half-time- woken by the TV after it was over... boohoo!)

  • Peter Darlington,

Trick for Spain is to get a strategy on that whole push everyone up for a goal business cos that's been the undoing of both England and Argentina. They are poison on the counter.

Oh, and start in full throttle, cos thay will...

  • Ross Mason,

So endeth a weekend of some of the best Sports Drama in history. Capital S, capital D.

Ghana....Heartbreak by the best example of why hand.. er... football should have a "penalty goal" maybe? Even Jesus couldn't have orchestrated a better death scene. And the bastard could still play in the final!!!

What theatre! And then to miss the penalty on fulltime with hero worship beckoning. But didn't poor Cardozo look shit scared as he preprared to take it. Wouldn't you?.....Thinking that might be enough for one day, saturday cruised on by. But there was more to come...and I wouldn't have put any money on it being any better than that!

The Dutchies. Solid, committed and playing to their strengths and the comeback got under Brazil's skins THAT's for sure!

Germany. Superb. So much for my prediction that the Messi(ah) is yet to score. But 4 for Christs sake! And so clinical. Obviously Maradona's Hail Mary prayer strings didn't work and God was on the side of the Germans today. Such is war. I have found that it helps to believe in yourself rather than ask (beg?) for divine intervention.

Paraquay......Would would believe 3 penalties and the score remain the same. Who would believe that the goal posts could be so thick and so close together? The side on camera showed it so close to coming out again too after it hit 3 posts within 2 seconds.

Thankfully it is a few days to the semis.....

  • recordari,

The penalty goal is a tough one. In this instance it seemed justified, but only because the penalty hit the cross bar. But, in a world cup, with a whole continent's heart on the line, it really feels wrong.

My heart says 'Penalty Goal' while my head says 'I can't quite think through all the ramifications of such a big rule change, so I'll stop trying'.

Anyway, I'm calling it the 'Hand of Sod'.

  • BlairMacca,

Sure it was the most blatant handball. However, I don't think its the villainous act everyone is making it out to be. Sure he cheated. But so does everyone that takes a dive. He had a split second to decide what to do, he got red carded, is suspended for the next match. Harry Kewell got the same treatment.
You basically have a 70%+ chance of coverting a penalty, the Ghanain should have scored it.
Having said that coming out and saying he is the new hand of god doesn't exactly put Suarez in the best possible light.

  • LegBreak,

Ballack’s absence is the best thing that could’ve happened to Germany IMHO. Because they sure play as a team. And if he’d been there we’d have been robbed of seeing Muller too.

Say what you like about the ethics of what Suarez did; that was some quick thinking

  • Sacha,

I'm sure Allied and Hanover investors are saying pretty much the same about Horton and Watson right about now - "gosh, I may think they're slimy thieving pricks but you have to admire how well they went about it, eh"
