  • Megan Wegan,

That reminds me... can I have David's book inscribed by Emma, like last year?

Do you know, that despite having stayed at my house several times since my buying the book, she has never inscribed it.

Maybe I should take it to Chch in a couple of weeks, and get David to sign it.

  • giovanni tiso,

Yup, got one of those too. (I bang on about this at every available occasion because I'm pretty sure it's the only good idea I've ever had.)

  • sally jones,

This is off task somewhat but on the general subject of keeping unusual pets, we once housed a horse in our backyard, which was a regulation suburban size lawn. The horse was also quite regular.

It was my sister's horse. She would have ridden it from the paddock where it normally lived to our house. She was twelve, which seems very young, but Mum has recorded the event in her diary, which I read while she was in hospital with her broken hip. No. She bequeathed all her old diaries to me. I was the only one interested in reading them. My brother and sister have lives.

So as the story goes, Mum tied my sister's horse called Duke to our water pipe - as you do - while we began our bridge game - as you do, with a horse tied to your water pipe out back. I don't know what the cat thought. Most cats don't have to put up with a horse in their yard.
Sure enough when we woke up in the morning, no horse. Classic Jones stuff up. Mum drove madly around the neighbourhood in search of the darn horse that we could only imagine charging down the eight lane motorway near to where we lived. But the police called later on in the morning to ask us if we had lost a horse.

Altogether, on balance, I think an otter would be less trouble.

My 3 month old grandson is getting the otter book. He has already read Hairy McClary.

    Beautiful pics.

    sally jones - heh!
I'm very sure most of us have weird pet stories - but that would be threadhijacking beyond the point of any desirability.

For what it's worth, I have an axolotyl.

You do *not* want to know the Adventures of An Asexual Axolotyl-

(*all axolotyls are asexual until a naturally - or otherwise- induced change occurs. And, their adventures - in a tank anyway- are exceedingly boring. Non-existent actually-)

  • Ross Mason,

Did you get the email about my limited print run chapbook As Above, So Below - Wit and Wisdom from the Hutt a deliciously thin tome, the blank pages are great for shopping lists and phone messages...

    No. ......did I miss something?

An 'easy' book for me to use. It would be "Humour for Oneself" then.

    ;-)

  • Islander,

if a woodchuck could chuck- actually, it(Jaws)is really good at belching either end, and upchucking (if it doesnt like the variety of worm offered.)

Why did I get an axolotyl?
    Is a rescue axolotyl.
My nephew was going to throw it down a drain (seawards inclined) and I was frightened about how it would morph, out there-

Will the next book feature a monotreme by any chance? There's not enough books about monotremes...

    How about monotremes and obscenity?

    Islander wrote:

    if a woodchuck could chuck

My daughter wrote this for school back in June (she had been reading a lot of Shel Silverstein prior to this):

    The Woodchuck

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck
If a woodchuck could chuck wood?
    Well I asked the woodchuck
    And the woodchuck replied
    "I've heard that riddle
    And I honestly tried.
    They said it was fun
So I picked up that wood
And I flapped and I flopped
How I wish that I could
    Live up to my name!
    Just think of the fame!"

So how much wood would a woodchuck chuck
If a woodchuck could chuck wood
With his feet on the ground
    Looking into the sun?
    The answer...
    Is NONE.

  • Peter Adamson,

Hi everyone, Peter the artist here.

Just popping in to offer my sincere thanks for all the really nice things that have been said so far about our book. It was a big chunk out of my home time and it's great to see such positive feedback.

I'm looking forward to whatever David's got in store for me next (and my work's really not that Gothic, honest!)

    Re: A Whole Otter Love

David: A terrible thing, I know, but I can't help thinking what the post-marriage sex life of Albert the Otter and the princess must have been like ;-)

David never gave me a brief, so the camera quietly panned away after the second to last page. And I'm very grateful for that!

  • Islander,

OOO, luverly! David Hood (and daughter - it is always proper to attach the author's name to their work - right?)

    We always used to answer

"How much wood would a woodchuck chuck
if a woodchuck could chuck wood?"

    with

"Why would a woodchuck chuck wood
    if a woodchuck could chuck....blood?/food?

and fall about laughing, because, in the primers, you find dissonance between spelling and saying really funny.

And Peter Adamson - beautiful drawings - you're using oil pastel? Crayon? Whatever, your work is wonderful, and will get a whole lot of wider exposure. Cheers!

I think everyone's grateful for that, dude -- it would have put quite a few children in therapy, I'm guessing...

Very sorry for my tragic mistake, gentleman -- I have now added you the special list! (And, just for the record, I've always thought you've had what it took to meet PA's stringent standards for special-list quality people.)

I'd be very happy to provide you with an extra-special sign-o-rama or inscript-o-rama to make up for my error. Possibly even in several different colours.

Hmmm... now where could I find a really top-notch Italian translator -- preferably one with a Ph.D. in awfully clever stuff?

Rob Stowell - hmm! Gollum looks to missing an eye (axolotyls regrow a lot of stuff, but eyes arnt among them.) Jaws is sort of earthquake-proofed in it's tank and certainly showed no signs of distress after the 6.1 shock (which was what the Great CHCH Shake turned out to be here.)

Must go off and order books - very soon-

Sorry, Matthew, I must be especially stupid tonight. A collaboration with you, of course. Sounds very interesting! Just drop me an email to discuss (at the address given in the 'envelope' under my Gravatar on the left).
