  • Bart Janssen,

    I'm so impressed David!

Now of course you will have to bring your banjo to Auckland!

At risk of being shouted down by those who know much more about music than I, to me there is something of They Might be Giants in the music as well. I guess it's the simplicity/purity of the ideas. Whatever, I enjoyed it.

  • BenWilson,

Russell wrote on this too, should the threads merge? Nice piece, btw, and an interesting philosophy behind it. Does it mean if some cretinous bogan does a huge burnout nearby, that this is an integral part of the piece?

  • Dave Patrick,

Very impressive indeed - all sorts of elements in there, I like it a LOT. River vs Sea especially, even before the "Bring out your dead" line was already my favourite. Was it meant to be longer, because it seems to cut off rather suddenly at the end

  • Kyle Matthews,

Nice David. The banjo gets a bad name from its association with 'rural trash' and inbreeding stereotypes, but it can be a lovely instrument. The Eastern, a Lyttleton based pair play a good banjo, but they're a bit 'more rock' than David's EP.

I vote Russell sends you more beer and we get a whole album out of you. At those song lengths, only about 20 more tracks required!

  • Ross Mason,

    Nice.

The Devil is in the detail....You naughty naughty boy!

More CRI time totally wasted listening to music.!!!

Copied and Copyright Cheque is in the mail. Have pirated 10,000 copies to distribute around the planet. Will buy you a beer.

Is that this new "digital economy" thing I keep hearing about?

  • Grant McDougall,

Top stuff, David ! Those are lovely songs. Neat band name, too. Apparently the L.E.D.s are in the middle of putting together their third album, so Blair's obviously on a role creatively.

  • 3410,

Bridle: sweet! (and some fools say white NZ has no culture?!)

The first second of Unlight the Candles sounds just like For the Turnstiles.

David, if you've never come across this album, you must.

So... you've heard him play before then?.

  • Grant McDougall,

Regarding Monteith's and NZ bands, I remember back in '93 when the 3Ds were recording The Venus Trail at Dominic Stones' big flat (an old, ex-Masonic temple) in downtown Dunedin and they stocked up on so much Monteith's there was literally none available in the central city bottle stores.

One of my flatmates visited them and told me there were so many empties everywhere that "you could see more bottles than floor".

When the album was released, Mac's were given a special thank you in the credits and on the promo tour they made sure to do a gig in Nelson.

  • Steve Barnes,

Oh and yes. Downloaded and enjoyed. Thank you David... and Blair of course... and I suppose Russell should be thanked for delivery of the lubricant that made it happen.
    Cheers.

  • David Haywood,

Thank you for all the kind (and insightful) comments, people...

At risk of being shouted down by those who know much more about music than I, to me there is something of They Might be Giants in the music as well.

No conscious influence, but I'm a big TMBG fan (Bob is listening to TMBG as I type) -- so it could have crept in by stealth. You may be more musically perceptive than you think, dude.

Does it mean if some cretinous bogan does a huge burnout nearby, that this is an integral part of the piece?

Actually, if you listen to 'River vs Sea' through headphones (and listen carefully), you can hear Blair's neighbour idling his engine. The neighbour wanted song-writing credit and we had to get our lawyers to sort him out.

Was ['River vs Sea'] meant to be longer, because it seems to cut off rather suddenly at the end

No, that's all we wrote. But the abrupt fade-out may well be a result of the neighbour's engine... I'm not sure...

Someone else has mentioned The Eastern' to me -- shall have to check them out. I think that almost everyone is more rock then Bridle Path.

I vote Russell sends you more beer and we get a whole album out of you. At those song lengths, only about 20 more tracks required!

There'll probably be at least another couple of EPs.

Apparently the L.E.D.s are in the middle of putting together their third album, so Blair's obviously on a role creatively.

I've had a sneak preview of some of the songs -- it's GOOD!

David, if you've never come across this album, you must.

No, I hadn't heard of that. The previews sound awesome -- just bought it! Thanks, 3140!

  • 3410,

How Then Should I See It is clearly the "great song" of the piece (musically, shades of Voom's Beth), but I Found Out is stacking up as my favourite.

I think you've crossed over your beers there Grant.

My girlfriend released a CD last year and if you know where to listen you can hear a toilet flushing as a flatmate did what needed to be done. All good.
