  • Sofie Bribiesca,

it is cold, you cannot feel your feet, there is no-one around and the surges of fear pulse stronger as you try to suppress all thought and concentrate on your thumping ice cream head ache..

Brrrrrrr, I had to go put on some socks. Most descriptive Merc, You put me right in the water, so I wont be doing that again!Love the water in the Sun. Probably my Mexican blood.
I had recently watched Billabong Odyssey,What I loved to see was the way in which these surfers became one with the wave and it seemed they had mastered any size wave. The footage was amazing.
Oh and David, I will locate my friend and info on T shirt.

  • merc,

Quikrippabong have a lot to answer for. Winter in the waves is a good time, no crowds, just the locals usually, stiff offshores pluming rooster tails to the shore, fish, many fish and long period swells stretching to the horizon in corduroy lines...(thanks Big Wednesday) and the latest wetsuit from China...
Mexico has Puerto Escondido and Baja, see wannasurf.com. Love that Mexican blood. As for surf movies...Peralta's Riding Giants is pretty cool. Still, surfing sub 45 degrees latitude is the last frontier, if like me, for you, two is a crowd.

  • NigelW,

Thanks for the wonderful post. Born n bred at 464 Avonside Drive, tossing stones at agile ducks in the evening mists, paddling up Dudley Creek, siting on our front door step feeding swans swimming in the flood water - didnt get to school until the tide went out - but that was before they cut Kerrs Reach through, and have just spent some time on a bit of land we have in sunny Ohai, a few km up the hill north of Riverton. And my stars are currently so aligned as to be drawing me from my home in the Cathedral City to (!!) Auckland. So when I read of your southward migration it was not so much the change of physical location as the change of spiritual environment that led me to sigh (in the nicest possible way) "Bastards. Bastards." Peace be with you!

Alright, alright, I'm doing it already! You sounds like my producers (who are also interested in the answer to this question). I've just been enjoying a week or so of getting to bed before 3 am. But I will get onto it very soon, I promise. Oh, and thanks for the interesting link, Crile!

My pleasure, Nigel. We were at 498 Avonside, which -- thanks to the vagaries of the Avonside numbering system -- is only eleven houses down the road from you (the downstream corner of Robson and Avonside to be a bit more geographically helpful). And we've just this weekend driven up to Ohai, too. A very lovely spot indeed, and a delicious smell of coal.

Auckland's not too bad... so long as you don't mind sitting in traffic jams, and can train your mind to blank out the architecture.
