  • Matt Swinson,

Moving from the 'sorry' topic on to more of a 'thank you' - Graham, that BLK JKS album you note on Music From Elsewhere is an absolute gem!

Can see where you're getting the TV on the Radio theme from - slightly more headfucky though. Great piece of music erudition.

    So, yeah, thanks.

  • 81stcolumn,

There are apologies then of course there are "Fergusons" -
Apologies with a follow up meeting about why you were wrong to make me apologise.

  • Russell C,

It does occur to me that Rodney Hide really ought to buy Hone a big drink and/or shout him another all expenses paid trip back to Paris for the mammoth distraction from Rodney's indiscretions with public funds .

All the media oxygen has been sucked up by the MoFos and Paris whereas Rodney's ripoffs of the taxpayer was far more serious, and potentially more damaging to the government. I somehow doubt John Key is too upset about the sideshow either.

  • Craig Ranapia,

Elsewhere, really lovely to see The Standard's"lprent" throwing out the troll bait Chris Trotter-style.

Because, of course, criticising an MP is just like a pack of Klansmen torturing and murdering black folks. And he's got the gall to accuse DPF of "dog-whistling" Dixie while, once more, trivialising obscene racist violence for a cheap sneer?

How many times do I have to keep calling bullshit on that? Sorry, but anyone who thinks Hide has someone dropped off the radar over the last week either needs to open both their eyes or just stop lying.

And if you disagree with Lynn Prentice, you're a pig-f***er who looks up skirts.

Ah, yes... throw offal in the water and pretend to be surprised -- nay, shocked and offended -- when the sharks show up. A little attention-grabber both Prentice and Farrar indulge in far too often for my liking.

One could also snark that if you really "don't give a shit" about something, it shouldn't occasion a 1,200 word post.

Very colourful Craig and oh so temperate ... so you really don't think that the Hone H issue has diverted any media attention that would otherwise still be focused on Rodney? really really? how interesting and yet somehow unlikely.

Anybody who thinks that Hide's short or long term viability as a politician has been in any way damaged by his recent escapades is seriously deluded. He behaved like a corporate executive, which is exactly what he and his (few) supporters thinks a politician is, a view shared by many in National and quite possibly our PM. If National throws him Epsom next time too, he'll be in Parliament again with the customary handful of ACT colleagues. None of this makes any material difference to his standing.

Harawira, on the other hand, is done.

  • Sacha,

Harawira, on the other hand, is done.

Matt McCarten has a different take on that (though he seems to be downplaying the long-term frustrations within the leadership about Harawira):

The hysteria this week has panicked the Maori Party into thinking it has to take drastic steps. Turia has decided there's no other option but that Harawira has to go. It is instructive Key has publicly endorsed Turia's decision.

Unfortunately for her, Harawira isn't accepting the offer to be an independent. The Maori Party constitution requires Harawira's electorate to support any expulsion as well as a national hui. Neither is going to happen.

They could try to expel him unconstitutionally from the caucus then bluff it out. Believe me, I've been there and that's a party suicide option.

Even if Harawira is eventually forced into a by-election, he would win. The consequence of that though is there would be two pro-Maori parties in the Maori seats at the next general election competing with Labour. Harawira gets two years to brand a new movement by attacking the Government. Turia and Sharples would be forced to spend their time defending modest gains from National. I wouldn't put money on the Maori Party surviving that three-way fight.

So before the Maori Party is railroaded into decapitating one of its own, it should slow down and carefully consider the possible fatal fallout to themselves.

Let's just say that I'm reliably informed that Rodney has made his position a lot more difficult that it really needs to be, and leave it there. To be blunt, you shouldn't shit on people in public and be naive enough to think there won't be any fallout.

To be honest, I wouldn't bet the Christmas Club money on the punditocracy getting anything about the Maori Party right. Their form is, to use a technical gambling term, a wee bit shit. :)

Uh, ex founding campaign strategist for the party in question is surely more accurate than "pundit" in McCarten's case.

Yeah, and Michelle Boag is a former President of the National Party -- but I'd still take anything she has to say with a grain of salt and plenty of tequila.
